Menopause - NHS

In this book, the author goes through the different symptoms offering insights into different ways of dealing with them - from food, to vitamins, exercise etc - and I really appreciated the straightforwardness of the way it was written. It didn't go over your head or get too technical, it just gave it to you bluntly and was full of some really wonderful practical and useful advice, alongside diagrams and graphics to help illustrate the points. It's also full of positivity and different coping mechanisms to ease you along! Many women find they wake up several times each night drenched with sweat and need to change their bed clothes and bed linen. This is known as night sweats. Mood changes

The symptoms of perimenopause

Perimenopause Power" is a women's health book focused on the changes that come with perimenopause. The author started by repeating some of the basics about the menstrual cycle found in her book "Period Power." It has some useful information about the changes that happen hormonally and how that causes changes in our bodies and emotions. She talked a lot about each and every thing that can go wrong (mild to serious) and things that you can do about them. This included advice on exercise, nutrition, herbs, and supplements as well as medication. While I agree with a lot of what she recommended, some of the nutritional advice seemed skewed in favor of eating massive amounts of eggs...like 3 eggs per meal. And she seemed to believe the only vegetable source of protein is tofu. Hardly. She tried to be gender-neutral (referring to "people with a womb" rather than "women," for example). While she provided useful information, I felt like this book would be most useful for women who are having problems since she spent a frighteningly long time on that. A healthcare professional can usually diagnose the menopause by the typical symptoms. Hormone blood tests are not usually needed to confirm that you are going through the perimenopause. However, they may be helpful in some cases - for example, in younger women - where perimenopausal symptoms might not be expected. Well written book detailing what is happening on going to happen with our bodies during the next step of our lives. I liked the authors information and the delivery of It! I hate talking about menopause,” she said. “It’s like saying you’ve closed up shop as a sexual being. It’s embarrassing.”

Everyone should read this book. If you are a woman (or not a cisgendered man), or if you love any women and want to understand what they have to endure, you should read this book.Menopause can happen naturally, or for reasons such as surgery to remove the ovaries (oophorectomy) or the uterus (hysterectomy), cancer treatments like chemotherapy, or a genetic reason. Sometimes the reason is unknown. As for just letting nature take its course? ‘Menopause can be both a positive transition and a situation where the use of hormones, along with other lifestyle measures, can be hugely helpful. It’s a stage of life, not a disease. For some reason, our hormones are meant to decline in midlife, which is why I’m not a fan of the term hormone replacement therapy, because it implies we should have hormones.’ She prefers the more neutral ‘menopausal hormone therapy’, or MHT. Menopause, defined as a full year with no period, hits women on average around the age of 51. But the years before that cessation – called perimenopause – can be more emotionally and physically fraught than we anticipate. We change a lot during these years. And, as we may remember from puberty, transitions can be awkward. Our bodies and our moods frequently betray us, but one of the worst parts of perimenopause and menopause is that no one talks about them.
