About this deal

My mouth twists and her voice trails off. Cheyenne meets my gaze again, but there’s no curiosity or pity. Not like I get from others. To Cheyenne, my hair is just another part of me, like the gap between my front teeth and my massive size-eight feet. The same way I see her love of furry fox ears and Marmite. It’s the way I wish the world would see both of us, instead of only focusing on the things that make us different. It’s what drew Cheyenne and me together in the first place. Mum kissed her teeth at me. “I do not want you out and about with so many strangers. You’re not like everyone else.” Look,” says Cheyenne after a short pause. “It’s my birthday, and your mum finally let you do something other than go to church. I’m not letting you waste it by acting moist in here.” Cheyenne hesitates for a moment, then pulls it from my clenched fist. “I don’t know why you let what other people think bother you so much,” she says, smoothing it out. She reaches toward me, the cap resting between her small fingers. “We don’t need to fit in.”

ONYEKA has been a book I've been following since its announcement, from the cover reveal to the Netflix deal, so I've been excited to read this for some time. Before she can even wrap her mind around all this new information, Onyeka finds herself, along with her Mom, on a private jet being whisked off to Nigeria. Their destination is the Academy of the Sun, a school developed just for Solari.

Having recently finished Tolá Okogwu’s first installment of Onyeka I was eager to begin Onyeka and the Rise of the Rebels. Book 2 is brilliant, yet another middle grade wonder for readers of around 8 years plus. Onyeka and the Rise of the Rebels Synopsis

But Onyeka and her new friends at the Academy soon have to put their powers to the test as they find themselves caught up in an epic battle . . . one that puts the future of all Solari at risk. A rich and gripping story of discovering that your greatest power can come from within. I loved it!’ Lisa Thompson, author of The Goldfish BoyOnyeka is the superhero you’ve been waiting for.’ Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink and Stars My eyebrows lift at her tone, but she’s right, and I don’t want to mess up her special day. I snatch the ugly cap from her. Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun is a 2022 middle grade science fiction novel by British-Nigerian writer, journalist and hair care educator Tolá Okogwu. This is Okogwu's debut novel, and it introduces readers to Onyeka, a British-Nigerian girl who discovers her hair has a psychokinetic ability and goes to an elite school in Nigeria where people like her are trained to save the country.
