About this deal

If you're looking for an outdoor camera that can go in the sea, get covered in sand, be dropped onto concrete, and still take pictures and video even in freezing temperatures, this is the best everything-proof camera out there. Moreover, it’s really small, so it doesn’t hinder your adventure for even a moment. And it’s so capable it will inspire adventures you hadn’t planned. That being said, the fact that the TG-6 is a bit hefty means the ergonomics are much better than smaller compacts. The weight makes it easier to compose with less handshake. Combined with the lens stabilization, getting sharp photos in regular light is quite easy. The OM System Tough TG-7 features an improved grip, a USB-C connector, an improved LCD screen, interval and time-lapse modes, support for vertical video shooting, support for the RM-WR1 weatherproof wireless remote and updated scene modes. With the TG-6, you can get insanely close and discover the mystery and beauty in the fine details of everyday objects. You’ll be exploring the world in a way you haven’t done since science class.

The TS7, or FT7 depending on where you are in the world, is Panasonic's latest beach-ready compact, with the advantage of an electronic viewfinder and waterproofing down to an impressive 31m, for a price that right now is lower than that of the TG-6. You also get a 20.4MP sensor, 4K video and a choice of fetching colors, although raw capture is missing, and battery life isn't as strong as it was on the previous FT5.There isn’t actually a huge difference between the TG-6 and its predecessor, the TG-5, which is an indication of how good the latter was. But at a time when video is becoming increasingly important, some key updates have been added. You're paying a premium for the rugged build. If you're on a tighter budget, you won't lose much if you can find a TG-5 at a discount, and there are budget options like the Fuji XP130 and Nikon W100 that aren't quite as capable, but are easier impulse buys to take on your island getaway. You’ll have to get used to keeping your ISO at 1600 or lower (you’ll need a steady hand for the slow shutter speed that results). There are dedicated Macro and Underwater modes on the dial, and a large number of Scene modes too. You can capture images with a natural look, or with artistic filters applied. If you enable Raw capture, you can add filter effects after the fact, right in camera.

Choose an ISO of 100. Choose an aperture of f18. This will effectively choke out the light and force the TG-6 to slow down the shutter speed to let more light in. The slow shutter speed will produce a silky waterfall. When the pictures are taken with the Date Stamp function set to On, the date and time is imprinted on the captured pictures. It may sound like we’re down on the Olympus TG-6 – but that’s really not the case. Having an f/2 lens puts it ahead of basically any other tough compact in terms of low-light performance and versatility, and its optical zoom lens and ergonomic form factor give it solid advantages over a GoPro. It’s just important to view the camera in context. It won’t produce incredible, mind-blowing images that can be blown up on billboards, but it will do exactly what it’s designed to do – produce decent-looking images in challenging conditions for a fairly reasonable price. Olympus Tough TG-6 review: video Pro Capture mode saves photos before and after the shutter release is pressed, to help you capture the right moment What remains the same is its 12-megapixel, 1/2.33-inch sensor. These days some smartphones actually carry larger sensors, so don’t expect super-stellar performance – but this camera is all about the places you can take photos that your mobile phone wouldn’t dare tread. There’s also a 4x optical zoom, which gives you the handy equivalent of a 25-100mm reach. Do you want an optical zoom? If yes, then the answer is emphatically: The Olympus is vastly more practical and has better IQ. There’s a lot of competition in the tough camera market right now – it remains one of the only compact areas that hasn’t yet been decimated by the unstoppable march of the smartphone.

You’ve already learned that new gear is not the answer to this depressing dry period you’re going through. But that’s because most gear is the wrong gear for you.

Unrivaled macro system for excellent close-up shooting capabilities up to 1 cm from the subject

The TG-6 has become our dedicated “leave it laying around the house” camera. It’s so small that it doesn’t bother my wife. It’s there when we need it. And, it’s so tough we don’t mind the kids using it. Since I wasn’t diving on these excursions, all of the images below were taken with the shallow water setting. Modern smartphones will surpass it. So no need to choose one in particular as they all do at whatever price level?. The Olympus Tough TG-6 builds on the success of the TG-5, with a handful of small improvements to that camera's already capable spec sheet.

Another new feature is Underwater Microscope mode, which complements the existing range of underwater shooting modes and makes this the obvious choice for anybody with a penchant for photographing small sea creatures while snorkelling or scuba diving. Or, indeed, any kind of macro photography. If you want a slow shutter speed to capture motion blur then you need to understand how to force the camera to produce a slow shutter speed. Suitable for shooting underwater in dim light, optimizing flash mode, auto focus and white balance for the appropriate settings. Kawika Nui, you can still crop your photos on your computer or even on a smartphone after importing, so what's the deal about the "sensor crop" you would like to have? For ther image quality, there is hardly a difference between cropping in the camera and doing so by hand on Mac/PC/mobile device. The advantage of cropping in "post pro", though, is that you can crop RAW, which, by design, won't work in the camera.
