The beautifully drawn illustrations are fantastic; Hissey manages to effectively capture texture and detail in the toys that the drawings look like photographs. All pictures have an element of darkness to them, which I think symbolises the overall theme of the book. When I was a child I remember feeling quite scared when my parents were reading the story to me, because the pictures seemed dull and gloomy and I thought the toys looked scary! Nonetheless, the illustrations are amazing. Source: I won a copy of this book through the Goodreads 'First Reads' programme. Thanks to the author Jane Hissey.) Hoot— a female white toy owl who lives in the loft. She is the only one of the toys who can fly. She is sensible, kind and motherly and likes to look after the "younger" characters. Hoot sleeps all day in her nest on top of the wardrobe (unless someone needs to be rescued when she leaps into action). At night, however, when everyone else is asleep, Hoot is awake and busy. No one is really sure what she does, but if anything is missing in the morning it may be because Hoot has tidied it away in the night! Ruby— a little toy mouse with a knitted red jumper. She is adventurous and playful with many ideas for new games. [15] Old Bear— an old dusty teddy bear, Old Bear is the sensible one who likes to sort out problems and keep everyone happy. He likes to look after all the other toys and loves reading them a bedtime story at the end of the day. [1] Old Bear is based on a real teddy bear the author, Jane, received from her grandmother when she was a baby. [2] The book is full colour throughout with beautiful illustrations, and stories that your kids will love.

Little Bear decides to grow an apple tree as a surprise for Old Bear. With help from his friends he manages to plant an apple pip in a flower pot. He is disappointed to hear that, despite watering it and keeping it warm, his pip could take years to grow into a tree. However, while he is waiting, Bramwell Brown finds a way that they can help Little Bear make an instant tree that will really surprise Old Bear. This was wonderful. I loved the old toys as they schemed ways to get Old Bear down from the attic. Fans of Toy Story will enjoy this one.Sailor— a sailor doll. Being the same size as Little Bear, Sailor has joined in his adventures. He loves anything to do with boats or the sea and knows a lot about both. [11] This book is quite lengthy; longer compared to some picture books. I rated this book 4 stars because I feel that this book may be long winded for some children causing them to lose interest. A mysterious box arrives in the playroom. After approaching it cautiously the toys discover it contains a new friend; Jolly Tall the giraffe. With Jolly still inside, everyone sets to work to turn his box into a cosy house for him. There is a problem though; Jolly is too tall to get out of the door! Using a toy crane, the friends finally manage to rescue Jolly and Jolly, in return, performs a rescue of his own. In the end the toys find that something Bramwell has been knitting all week turns out to be the perfect present for their new playmate. Recognized in both publishing and TV, Jane Hissey is best known for her children’s book series Old Bear & Friends. First published in 1986, it later became the inspiration for BAFTA award winning TV series Old Bear Stories. A beautifully-illustrated classic picture book treasury from popular author-illustrator Jane Hissey featuring five of her most-loved stories.Old bear is a fictional children’s story where toys come to life! Brown bear had a strange feeling that his friend old bear had been forgotten after being placed in the attic. He decides that they shall all go on a mission to rescue friend old bear down from the attic. Several attempts are made before Rabbit and little bear realise that they can rescue old bear by flying in a toy helicopter up to the attic. They are successful in doing this and Old bear is found and reunited with his friends. The Naughty Cats— the main antagonists. Five toy cats who cause a lot of trouble for Ruby, Blue and Blanket but Blanket knows how to get them to behave themselves. [18] There has been a party in the playroom and the toys can see that there is lots of food left on the table, but it is just out of reach. Little Bear explores underneath the tablecloth and discovers that it looks just like a circus tent; a starting point for a wonderful new game. Many of the toys want to perform in the circus and others come to watch. It is Rabbit who turns out to be the star of the show and he, accidentally, solves the problem of the out-of-reach food. Vintage Book Paper Confetti from Old Books Heart-Bear-Flower-Angel Wedding Table Confetti Decoration A wonderful read from my childhood, one I’d certainly suggest for other youngsters. Whilst it is not my all-time favourite childhood read I can still recall all the details of this one meaning it certainly left a lasting impression upon my young mind.

I'm going to go out on a limb and give it the full five stars. The story is sweet and well-told, but the illustrations--oh, those illustrations!--they're absolutely gorgeous. A note at the end says it might take her a year to produce a book, because of the quality of the illustrations, and I believe it. Stun-ning, and absolutely apt for this charmer of a tale. It is a wet afternoon and the rain is coming in the playroom window and dripping through a hole in the dolls' house roof. The poor Doll family don't know what to do; all their things are getting wet. The toys dream up lots of ingenious ways of mending the hole, but nothing really works until Little Bear finds a solution quite by chance. While standing on the roof, clutching his umbrella, he accidentally falls through the leaky hole and the Doll family are delighted with the surprising repair.Ruff— a bouncy toy dog. He is fun to play with but sometimes can muddle up games by being a little too bouncy. He does have to be careful not to leave muddy footprints everywhere. [14] As a child growing up in Norfolk, Jane developed a love for writing and drawing. Her holidays were spent wandering fields and lanes, conjuring up fantastical worlds with pencil and sketchbook. When she wasn’t doing this she would spend days at a time sitting in her favorite tree, reading the likes of Arthur Ransome and Enid Blyton. Elsie— a little toy elephant, she is the newest character to join the toys. She is very good at doing almost everything but sometimes she is a little too enthusiastic when tying bows or blowing up balloons, and does not know when to stop. The other toys have a job keeping up with her. Elsie's trunk means that she can do things that the others cannot, such as using a knife, fork and spoon all at once and blowing the most amazing bubbles! As Elsie is the same size as Little Bear she can join in all his games but he doesn't always need her help. [20]
