About this deal

Roche expects Novo Nordisk insulin pen data will sync to the mySugr app and Accu-Chek SmartPix software. For mySugr Bundle users, coaches will now get injection history alongside other diabetes data. The kid-friendly Echo Plus allows for half-unit dosing and a maximum 30-unit injection, whereas the NovoPen 6 has a minimum dose of one unit and a maximum dose of 60 units. Over time, these new connected pens will replace the NovoPen 5 and current NovoPen Echo. Attachment for Disposable Pens Technology is rapidly changing the way we manage and live with diabetes, mainly Type 1 diabetes, and is enabling us to manage our condition better and achieve better long-term outcomes. The availability of new technologies, such as Smart Insulin pens, further enables us to achieve better clinical and quality of life outcomes each day and is a welcome diabetes tool in Ireland”, said Dr Kate Gajewska, Clinical Manager for Advocacy and Research, Diabetes Ireland. Manually logging data is time consuming. It typically did not show the exact time that insulin was administered, for example, before or after a meal was consumed. Smart connected devices reduce this time spent logging and provide more precise data.”

NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus Novo Nordisk announce launch of NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus

For me, the best thing was that it became a safety net in terms of knowing when I last injected insulin. Before insulin pump therapy I had injected over 15,000 times during 10 years with type 1 diabetes and there were times when I would ask myself 'did I give my insulin?'. NovoPens provided me with that answer, which helped to keep me safe.” Diabetes is a difficult condition to manage and the number of people living with it is on the rise. When diabetes is poorly controlled and not managed properly it can lead to health complications for people. Novo Nordisk Commercial Strategy & Corporate Affairs executive vice-president Camilla Sylvest said: “Our non-exclusive partnership strategy allows us to integrate with the various digital platforms that people are already using to help manage their diabetes. Once your smart insulin pen is connected to an integrated app, this information can then be sent virtually to help people manage their insulin data more easily and in one place. We’ve seen big strides in the development of insulin pump technology in recent years, and now evolving smart insulin pen technology is showing how these devices can make life a little easier for people who use multiple daily injections.

Emma Wilmot, consultant diabetologist, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust said: “Integrating innovative technology as a routine part of diabetes care is an important step to improve diabetes care. Novo Nordisk’s smart connected pens are an example of how technology can support people living with diabetes to gain greater insight into the management of their diabetes, on their journey to becoming experts in their diabetes. In my clinic, the opportunity to view daily insulin data will allow me to better support the individual with diabetes to achieve their goals. It will allow for more tailored and informed advice on optimisation of glucose levels, with the ultimate goal of improving future outcomes.” The two smart connected insulin pens now allow healthcare professionals to view the insulin dosing information of people with diabetes, helping to facilitate more productive consultations and support personalised treatment guidance. Currently, insulin injection dosing information is manually recorded in a logbook or app. However, in clinical practice, incomplete or inaccurate information on insulin dosing and timing can be a significant barrier to optimising glycaemic control. It's a good idea to carry medical identification such as an insulin safety card or insulin passport – a small card with up-to-date details of the type of insulin you use, and what to do in an emergency.

Smart insulin pens can also connect with certain apps that let you keep your insulin dosages and blood glucose data in one place. This means you can look at the timing and dose of your insulin in relation to any food you’ve eaten or activity you’ve done to see how it has affected you. The data can also tell you how much insulin is still working in your body which can help you make decisions for unplanned activity or unexpected sugar readings. Dexcom continuous glucose monitoring ( CGM) data will be combined with Novo Nordisk connected insulin pen data and “guidance information” to “give advice” that makes diabetes easier. The press release notes broadly that this will happen “in the coming years.” Dexcom recently acquired TypeZero, a startup that has insulin dosing advice algorithms for injection users. One day, it’s very possible Dexcom CGM users on injections will get personalized dosing advice based on their patterns.

Key facts

When asked if there was one thing he’d like to see improved, James adds: “Currently, on the FreeStyle LibreLink app a person must select if they have given an air shot or not. It would be useful and less time consuming if this could be automatically detected by the app.” Digital health tools such as the smart insulin pen will improve diabetes management by empowering patients with data”, Professor Derek O’Keeffe, Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospital Galway (UHG), and Professor of Medical Device Technology at the National University of Ireland Galway. If you are prescribed a Novo smart pen and wish to use it like a standard insulin pen without the connectivity function, then you can discuss this with your clinic or healthcare provider - for example, so you can see if a different pen may suit you better. How can smart insulin pens affect diabetes management? Insulin treats the symptoms of diabetes by lowering your blood glucose. But it can sometimes cause your blood glucose to go too low. This is known as hypoglycaemia, or hypos. Make sure you know the symptoms of a hypo, and always carry a source of glucose with you, such as sugary sweets, in case you need to treat a hypo.
