About this deal

The D3500's live view autofocus is much faster and more responsive than we'd expect from a simple contrast-based AF system. For automakers it will be simpler when the manual dies,” said Ivan Drury, senior analyst at Edmunds.com. “It’s kind of a hassle for them to offer both, same with dealers. Given the market forces, it’s going to go away.”

No, please, not the 'moreorless' argument again. Can you not come up with something even halfway original for a change? And pretty much anyone that isn't a complete stranger to the DPReview forums can figure out exactly why you're here, 'contributing' to a D3500 review comment section. Modes: Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent (7 Types), Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade, Preset Manual, All Except Preset Manual with Fine-tuning It's how its implemented in the different systems. The Z's use an on-sensor detect system (similar to LiveView auto focusing, which is slower than using regular AF even on a DSLR). photoMEETING - "Hihi! In my country only 20% of the people buy new cars with automatic transmission" The viewfinder might only be a cheaper ‘pentamirror’ design rather than the pentaprism found in more expensive DSLRs, but its bright and clear, you can see right into the corners of the frame without shifting your eye and there’s no colour fringing at the edges. The information display is limited to basic exposure and status information along the bottom, but this is big, clear and easy to see.Overall the D3500 is an affordable camera that is simple enough to not be intimidating, but features enough tech that a young photographer could grow into it. The D3500 probably won’t be a 'forever' camera, but it’s a solid place to start.

Manual transmissions account for just 2 percent of all vehicles sold in 2018, according to data from Edmunds.com. In 2006, 47 percent of new models in the U.S. were offered with automatics and manuals. Now it’s down to 20 percent and dropping sharply."

T3 - why would these 'casual shooters' be looking for something other than a smartphone, then? Because they've read something on the Internet or listened to some sales person at the 'big box' store? It's silly, into this priceclass, to draw people into DSLMs. A hell old A6000 for instance is sensor-wise inferior to the D3500, end of story. And the EVF is PITA! way worse, than the good EVF with the same 1.44 MP on my V1, which is 2011. DPR better goes with the EOS M200, without Viewfinder, than with the D3500 Nikon. Which is messy. The DX Lenses choice is not that bright, but way more, than for EOS-M System. Both 18-55, 70-300 are optically, especially under Price-Performance Hindsight excellent Lens Choices. You press this button on the 18-55mm AF-P kit zoom to release the lens retraction mechanism. The D3500 won't let you shoot if the lens isn't extended. The Z50 was meant to fall probably somewhere between the D7500 and the D5600 if you wanted to use that as a scale for things, although I think the D7500 has dropped in price, possibly below the Z50.The camera's 'Guide' mode tries to help teach you the camera's functions and how to get the most out of it. The Fujifilm X-T100 easily wins for dynamic range in our lab tests, with the Canon EOS Rebel T7/2000D in second place and the Nikon D3500 and Sony A68 very slightly behind. Verdict Nikon does not use on-sensor phase-detection autofocus in its DSLRs, relying on slower contrast-based autofocus instead. Or at least it should be slow. But somewhere along the line Nikon has found a way to make the D3500’s live view AF feel almost as responsive as a mirrorless camera’s, and we think it’s down to the AF-P autofocus technology in its kit lens. I have a VERY strong opinion about this. Any opposing opinions will be seen as existential threats resulting in an inflammation of my amygdala. Failing to validate my personal gear selections will be viewed as proof of the mental deficiencies of dissenters.

The battery life on the D3500 is amazing, though. It will effectively last for days at a time if you shoot through the optical viewfinder: longer than its predecessor or mirrorless cameras. You can’t charge over USB, which is disappointing, but during our time with the camera we didn’t even notice a percentage drop on the battery.

A superb budget DSLR that’s tailor-made for beginners, but it’s not a huge improvement on the D3400

Our lab tests show that the D3500’s image quality is very much on a par with its rivals. There are slight differences here and there in resolution, noise and dynamic range, but these show up more in lab tests than they do in real-world shooting. In practice, the D3500 delivers sharp, vibrant and very well exposed images, and the 18-55mm AF-P lens performs really well for an inexpensive kit lens, with consistent sharpness across the focal range and right to the edges of the frame. There is some colour fringing and distortion in its raw files, but if you enable the in-camera lens corrections you won’t see this in its JPEG images – and most photo-editors now apply in-built lens correction profiles to raw files.
