About this deal

But there are some who criticize me, saying a journalist shouldn’t show emotion or take sides in a story. They’ll tell me that I’m doing it wrong, that I’m not “objective.” I reject the idea of being blindly unbiased. There are bad guys and good guys. A monster is a monster. Fifteen years ago, I began studying mosaic art as a way of decompressing from my career on TV and focusing on making beautiful things out of broken pieces. That’s what I love about mosaics…they are a metaphor for life.

Lisa Guerrero - Women Create Lisa Guerrero - Women Create

I always tried to be Lisa’s biggest advocate, starting from the moment that I hired her,” Gaudelli told The Post. “Her memory of that season and mine are quite different. This is the first time I’m learning of her pregnancy, and I’m sorry that she struggled through that difficult time without the full support of the team surrounding her. As a woman trying to navigate my own career, reading about Lisa Guerrero's tenacity and grit as she strived and worked tirelessly to make a name for herself was absolutely inspiring. Her story is compelling, impactful, and most importantly influential. Guerrero writes of her life and career in cheerleading, modeling, acting and finally journalism, specific parts of her life that not only defined her as a warrior but teaches her readers how to stand tall, have confidence, and how to handle the curveballs that are thrown at you. Her stories about Best Damn Sports Show Period and her year being a sideline reporter for MNF were so infuriating, often making me angry on her behalf; but in the end it was incredibly inspirational to read how Guerrero strengthened her bravery, found her voice again, and forged her own way through journalism to be a trailblazer for the many women behind her. Her words of bravery and encouragement resonated with me and will surely motivate all of her readers to lead with an empathetic heart and an overprepared mind. She has many issues with men. Most men. First she stands up to the NFL management as a cheerleader. Then she took a job on a Fox Sports show as the only female harassed by the guys (surprisingly she praises Tom Arnold!). What was she expecting? She certainly had a few cases of discrimination or inappropriate jokes but she also made some really bad choices that either put her in those situations or failed to stand up for herself when she could have. As one executive told her, she was trying to be a square peg in a round hole. For as brave as she wants to claim she is, she falters then often blame-shifts in an attempt to identify with the #MeToo movement.

This is a book about bravery. I decided to write it because every day I receive messages from viewers asking me how I’m able to fearlessly investigate and interview bad guys. They want to know where my courage comes from. And my answer contradicts everything journalists have been taught. But I’m not a typical journalist—I was never trained in a traditional newsroom. I didn’t receive a journalism degree. I didn’t even finish college. I couldn’t stop thinking about this tiny victim whose horrible death had been treated so callously by law enforcement. I found the treasure trove of old Beta tapes,’’ Guerrero said. “And I was really reluctant to look at them because I was so traumatized.” RELATED: ‘America’s Sweetheart’, US Olympic Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton In ICU With Rare Form Of Pneumonia

Warrior: My Path to Being Brave: Guerrero, Lisa

Meanwhile, my father, a planning consultant for nonprofits, is also a gifted photographer, poet, and visionary. He has dedicated his life to social service. Because of my parents’ influence, my mixed media mosaics convey messages of empowerment, pride in culture, and my commitment to social justice. But getting in faces is what I’m known for. Although I race up to my subject and pepper them with questions, I’m completely calm. My blood pressure doesn’t go up. I don’t breathe heavily. In sports they call it being “in the zone”—everything moves in slow motion, and you envision the outcome before it happens. I wasn’t sure yet. But I told him I’d like to meet and interview Monica and see where the story would lead. When Charles Lachman, our executive producer, gave it the green light, I headed to Gering, the remote town in Nebraska where Juliette had lived and died. I met with Monica, and we toured the home where Juliette had been killed. Then Monica played me the tape recording of her conversation with Doug Warner, the district attorney handling the case. As I got older, the loss of my mother felt bigger. I knew I was missing something crucial that everyone else had and took for granted. My brother and I would play hooky the Friday before Mother’s Day. We didn’t want to sit in the classroom while kids made crafts and cards for their moms. Dad always planned something fun to keep our minds off such holidays. Still, it was hard to forget that everyone we knew was celebrating something we couldn’t. Rebecca Aguilar, Emmy award-winning reporter, SPJ President (2021-2022), Founder of Latinas in Journalism, and Founder of Wise Latinas LinkedFinally, after months of chasing leads, we discovered where the three suspects were living: Charyse Geurts, the mom, had moved outside Green Bay, Wisconsin, while her ex-boyfriend Dustin Chauncey (who wasn’t the twins’ father) and the third adult, Brandon Townsend, had relocated to separate towns in Colorado. Her pregame scenarios tend to also include the possibility that the interview subject might simply make a break for it. I was part of the reason he’d been arrested and charged with the murder of two-year-old Juliette Geurts. For more than six years, he’d escaped justice. In a few minutes, he’d finally receive it. I always tried to be Lisa’s biggest advocate, starting from the moment that I hired her,” Gaudelli said in the statement. “Her memory of that season and mine are quite different. Warrior by Lisa Guerrero | Hachette Book Group

I was very cynical about it,’’ Guerrero said. “I said, ‘OK, I will do these pictures and I will do this cover because I’ll get to be 40 and a Latina on the cover of Playboy — very rare. I am very comfortable in my sexuality and my femininity, as are many Latinas. And I had fun doing the photo shoot, and I have no regrets about that. But I knew it was going to be really controversial. And they’re gonna be interested in talking to me. And I’m going to have a plan, because they’re going to ask me, ‘What’s next?’’’ Guerrero wrote a memoir titled Warrior: My Path to Being Brave which was published by Hachette Books in January 2023. [14] Guerrero revealed to The Post’s Andrew Marchand in 2021 that she dealt with suicidal thoughts after she faced a slew of ridicule in her one season on the “MNF” sidelines in 2003. Now, in a new memoir, entitled “Warrior,” the 58-year-old revealed that she had a miscarriage during one of the games near the end of that season. Thank you for listening to me,” Monica said as we hugged. “We did it! And we couldn’t have done it without you and your team.” Lisa Guerrero reveals that she had a miscarriage during her season on the “Monday Night Football” sidelines in 2003. Getty ImagesWhen her incredibly attractive husband dumps her after he refuses to spend more than a day or two at a time with her at home in retirement, she naively believes he just likes to go on long golf trips with the boys and isn't cheating on her. Right. That's why he secretly moved out when she was out of town, lied to her, and broke up over the phone. For some reason she continues to praise him when she should have shared much more of what really was going on. Inside Edition isn't really my thing, but I'm definitely interested in memoirs by women who've worked in sports journalism, so I wanted to give Warrior by Lisa Guerrero a try.

Much like its author, Warrior is disarmingly candid, unapologetically honest. Courage, oft-celebrated as a trait, is actually a choice we make. Lisa's odyssey is the story of what one person is able to achieve when she chooses to be brave." She writes: “I just confirmed everything that had been said about me … I was that stupid bimbo. She’s an idiot — she doesn’t even know what players she’s interviewing!”As Inside Edition’s chief investigative correspondent for more than a decade, I’ve covered hundreds of stories—consumer scams, crooked politicians, corrupt televangelists, rapists and predators, child, women, elder, and animal abuse, and, well, the list goes on. I do confrontations every day,’’ Guerrero told The Athletic. “I feel like they are necessary, not to serve myself, but to serve the purpose of the story or the victim or survivor. … I feel like I’m being brave on their behalf.” Fast forward to reading “Warrior” - a real eye-opener! Her SoCal sports experience and interviews prior to MNF was impressive to say the least (Shaq, Kobe, Bonds). Learning about the work environment and what she was subjected to on and off the field brought additional respect for her. She was judged by many who never knew that was happening (until now!). This is a very brave lady. Guerrero's past wasn't a complete mystery to me but I think a lot of people my age may have associated her with a short run as a sideline reporter on Monday Night Football and a place alongside the hooting and hollering-infused boys club vibe of Fox Sports' now horribly dated Best Damn Sports Show Period. She seemed to coast in on a wave of networks trying ton meld sex appeal to their sports content, but the book reveals that not only is Guerrero as capable a sports mind as her male counterparts (typically she's far more capable, really), but her determination and perceived fearlessness make her an exceptional person who can blaze trails and upset status quos with the best of them. What I had been experiencing was really traumatic. Then, I felt it was more important: post-Me Too, post-Time-Out, and when there’s a real discussion in sports about mental health. I thought ‘ This is the time to publish my book.’ And talked about what really happened to me, so people could learn from my experiences.
