The app is very simple to use, but it doesn't offer much in the way of actual cooking controls. Instead, it features hundreds of different step-by-step recipes that utilize the Instant Pot. Choose a recipe, select Start Cooking, and tap through each step as you prepare the ingredients. When a step involves cooking with the Instant Pot, you can send those cooking presets right to the appliance from your phone. The app also lets you bookmark your favorite recipes or add any to custom collections. The large, chunky lid is the mechanical heart of the Instant Pot because it enables the pressure cooking and controlled venting processes. A removable silicone ring (you get two in the box) mounts into the underside of the lid to provide the seal. We were keen to see if the Vortex Air Fryer really could cut down on the amount of oil we used for cooking, and it didn’t disappoint – certainly with potato wedges, for example. Whole baskets of food required only a tablespoon of oil for a wonderfully crispy texture. Helpfully, the cooking tray drains off any excess oil, so our food didn’t soak up any more oil once the cooking time was complete.
Instant Pot is known for its combi-cooking gadgets, and the Vortex Air Fryer – it's called the Vortex 6 Quart in the US, and the Vortex 4-in-1 in the UK – is the latest addition to its line of air fryers. With a 5.7-liter capacity, this sizable kitchen appliance is designed to deliver super-crisp, juicy food in a fraction of the time it would take in a conventional oven. If you don’t want to use a prefab recipe, tap the Kitchen tab and select the Instant Pot Pro Plus. Here, you can select any mode and simply start cooking. The implementation is a bit awkward, because if you want to control cooking time, pressure levels, temperature, venting, and other settings, you need to tap the pencil icon next to the mode and input those details. I would much prefer the option to make those changes upfront for each cooking mode, rather than turning to a separate menu.

Note, though, that at around 32cm high and 30cm wide this is a relatively bulky appliance, so if you don’t have enough room to keep it on a countertop you’ll need to store it away when it’s not in use. It has the same touchscreen too, but with six presets rather than four. There are also buttons for time and temperature, alongside a stainless steel dial, all of which are easy to clean, as they can be wiped with a damp cloth. The air fryer can reach a maximum temperature of 400F / 205C and can cook for up to one hour, that ensuring you’ll be able to prepare a huge variety of dishes. The appliance's internal cavity holds a six-quart steel pot that sits on a heating element and is removable for cleaning.
