The modulation section is equipped with a comprehensive Mod Matrix, five LFOs, and five loopable DAHDSR envelopes with definable Curve and BPM value for each segment. Eight assignable Macros can be used for advanced control over multiple parameters. Although creating new sounds on Hydrasynth is very intuitive, the synth also features a Randomizer that can be applied as to individual modules, as well as to the whole patch itself. Fortunately, other than a few minor inconsistencies (there are, for instance, three different methods of copying objects), the Hydrasynth is a dream to navigate, whether you're making minor tweaks or dishing up entirely new patches. The Hydrasynth is a seriously impressive opening salvo from a fledgling company; hopefully it heralds a more expressive future for synthesis. The Oscillators The 12dB and 24dB ladder filters are smooth and effective; they're accompanied by bass-compensated versions (Fat12 and Fat24) that don't sacrifice their bottom end to high resonance. And while you're unlikely to mistake the MS20 filters for the real thing, they offer worthy alternate responses. I don't know how accurate the Threeler filters are, but I liked the band-pass mode in particular; some of its cutoff and resonance combinations give strange, buzzy but interesting results. What really grabbed people when the original Hydrasynth was first announced was the surprisingly flexible sound generation system combined with the plentiful real-time control that included polyphonic aftertouch (a relative rarity amongst synths even today). When people started to use and hear the synth, this interest turned to genuine excitement. All new & used goods supplied by Music Matter are warranted free from defects for 12 months from the date of supply (unless otherwise stated).

I'm talking about the Yamaha CS‑80, of course. This mighty instrument, in the hands of virtuosos such as Vangelis, proved that synthesizers really could be responsive, expressive musical instruments after all. However, all these can perhaps be forgiven given the Explorer’s compact and portable remit – don’t forget that you can be truly mobile with this synth as it claims up to four hours’ battery life from decent AAs. Another winner for ASM. With all of the buzz surrounding the reveal of the Deluxe and Explorer models, we thought it would be fun to spend some time diving into the sound design depths of the Hydrasynth to emerge with a handful of tips to enrich your own patch creation process. Most of these concepts may be exercised on any model of Hydrasynth (with one notable exception), and can serve as a jumping off point for other ideas within the incredibly versatile sound design engine. The Hydrasynth is a powerhouse of sounds and has limitless possibilities. The workflow is very easy with no menu diving, just a fabulous synth. Build quality is flawless, sound quality is pristine and the light show from all the knobs and buttons coming on is a lovely touch. If you’re looking for a sound that’ll surprise, inspire and frighten you at every opportunity it gets, the Hydrasynth is ready and waiting. As mentioned earlier, its virtual analog 8-voice polyphony is already exciting – but it becomes a different beast entirely when you dive into its full capability. However, just remember that this is the Hydrasynth, in no sense of the word is it conventional! For a start, you have three oscillators per voice which include standard waves, plus wave-scanning, the latter an intuitive type of wavetable synthesis where you can assign eight waves and then scan through them using a dial/mod route. Giving you more tools to manipulate your sound, the Hydrasynth's three oscillators are fed through a mixer, a Noise Generator and a Ring Modulator.

Ashun Sound Machines introduces Hydrasynth, the eight-voice polyphonic wave-morphing synthesizer with three oscillators per voice, seemingly endless amount of modulation options, and many other unique features such as Mutators. Besides traditional analog modeling, oscillators 1 and 2 sport a Wavescanning feature, which allows you to smoothly scan through hundreds of waveshapes at will. Mutators open up potential for ever more extreme sound shaping with PWM, FM, and more. Then there are two filters: a twelve algorithm multimode, and a classic state-variable 12dB/oct, which can be routed in parallel, and in series. Hydrasynth also has a ton of effects, from Delays to Reverbs to Flangers, and much more. Each of the oscillators lets you choose from a selection of 219 single-cycle waveforms. And on top of that, two of the oscillators have powerful wavemorphing capabilities. It is extremely well thought out in terms of the human interface with 26 access buttons for each major function and 8 knobs to deal with parameters. Amending or starting a patch from new is a total breeze, I find myself able to put very 10 complex patches together in under an hour. Set how the beautiful long ribbon controller affects sounds with the ribbon button. Hold the chord button until it flashes, then press up to eight notes and trigger them from one key – much like some classic polysynths. The ribbon is a very nifty thing indeed and can act as an instrument in its own right. Play it like a theremin. Alternatively, assign it modulation duties or use it to bend held notes/chords. As well as performance controls, we saw earlier how straightforward it is to rope in conventional modulators. Of those, the five LFOs are identical, having all the expected waveforms, noise, plus a user waveform with up to eight steps. Each step of this 'almost sequencer' is programmed by those ever-present encoders, with a smoothing option if necessary. The modulation routes themselves can also become modulation destinations, and can be targeted by the Macros too.

Furthermore, all of the Hydrasynth's LFOs feature delay, fade in, 3 triggering modes, smoothing, start phase and one shot modes allowing them to act as envelopes and BPM sync. Extra customisation of your sound comes in the form of Mutators. Both oscillators 1 and 2 are routed into Mutators which give you 7 processes with with to transform your sound. Patch memory has increased in v2.0! The Hydrasynth now holds 8 banks of 128 patches, for a total of 1,024. We hired some of the best sound designers in the world to create the factory patches. A quirky synth with an odd workflow definitely not for beginners. Trying to design a bread-and-butter patch on this synth can take many times longer than on a straightforward VA synth like a Nord or DSI/Sequential. Oscillators also alias a bit more than I had been led to believe by reviewers. But it is very deep and I think it can take you places you haven't been before!Sine, triangle, Square, Saw up, Saw down, S&H, Low random, Noise, Pulse width 25%, Pulse Width 12.5%.
