In 1996, manga author Kouta Hirano published a one-shot, titled Hellsing: The Legends of Vampire Hunter, in Wanimagazine's hentai magazine Comic Kairakuten. [6] [7] Hirano commented that it was not his intention to create a story of this genre, and that he only wanted to create a "somewhat daring" action story. [8] Hirano said that the original story did not take him long to create, and that the fact that he was drawing hentai at the time afforded him the opportunity to have it published. [9] Afterwards, Hirano considered to create another story, using the same setting, removing the erotic side and focusing more on the action, explaining that this was the origin of Hellsing. Given its "atypical" universe, Hirano and the publisher, Shōnen Gahōsha, decided to test the reception with readers, explaining that that was the reason why the start of the series may seem "a little disjointed", and that after the reception turned out to be positive, it was decided to make it a serialized work. Funny enough growing up I hated the Hellsing anime. But for some reason I was compelled to give this Deluxe Edition manga a try. Is it better? Yes. Is it still stupid? Very much so. Beveridge, Chris (September 28, 2007). "Hellsing Ultimate Vol. #3 (also w/limited edition)". Mania.com. Archived from the original on December 10, 2011 . Retrieved April 8, 2022. As the scale and frequency of incidents involving the undead escalate in England and all around the world, Sir Integra discovers that the remnants of a Nazi group called Millennium still exist and are intent on reviving Nazi Germany by creating a battalion of vampires. Millennium, Hellsing, and the Vatican section XIII Iscariot clash in an apocalyptic three-sided war in London, and Millennium reveals its true objective: to destroy the vampire lord Alucard, ending a feud begun during World War II. Indeed, the manga is a treat for gun enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates some stunning displays of violence. Alucard, though ostensibly the protagonist, is not a “good guy.” He is a servant to the Hellsing Organization, answering specifically to Integra, but he has no qualms about killing anyone who gets in his way, and he delights in destruction. In fact, he and Integra’s butler, Walter, had defeated Millennium once before, and Alucard delights in the prospect that he can do battle with them once again.

The OVA Adaptation

One thing I liked about the book was that it always kept moving. The plot kept up at a consistent pace, carefully balancing exposition and action so there is never a dull moment. This plays well with the smooth flow of the fights and makes the book very engaging. However, this can sometimes turn into a fault. Occasionally events and enemies that appear as though they should be stronger or more formidable are breezed through, making them less impactful.

Aside from their size and design, the only other thing that’s different about the Deluxe Editions is their sound effects. In these editions, the sound effects are translated underneath the panels or directly on the panels underneath the original Japanese sound effects, whereas they aren’t translated in the individual volumes and there is no reference guide in the individual volumes that translate them either, so this is definitely a nice addition. Hirano since then has switched to digital drawing since Volume 5. The digital software he uses is Photoshop, commenting that he "worked his ass off to learn that program on his own". Initially, Hirano drew it with a pen, and he scanned the image for digital coloring and when he feels like it was hopeless, it means that it was done. Hirano also said that Zorin Blitz was his least favorite character to draw. However, he mentioned that he had to put tattoos on Zorin so that she could stand out as a character; but later complains about how hard it was to draw her, because of the fact that half of her body is covered in tattoos and wondering how he was supposed to draw her when she stretches out a hand on the wall or floor. Seras, known as “Police Girl” by most, is hesitant to drink human blood or live in a coffin, grasping on to her remaining humanity and grappling with her steady transformation into a monster. Her newfound abilities are necessary, however, in the fight against Millennium, a holdover Nazi organization led by a man who was a Lieutenant in the SS during World War II, now known as The Major. The Major’s chief concern is to plunge the world into war once again, lusting after the chaos, violence, and upheaval that war brings. The Hellsing Organization isn’t the only group invested in defeating Millennium, however; the Vatican’s mysterious Iscariot Organization has deployed their hideously powerful Father Alexander Anderson whose bloodlust for Alucard occasionally threatens his ability to perform his duties. And though Alucard, Seras, and Anderson are all incredibly hard to kill, Millennium has another ace up its sleeve: They have been building an undead army for decades, scientifically modifying their ranks to be stronger. Aside from vampires running around killing people and the police girl having a nice moment, not an awful lot happens. I actually thought the first arc was a lot more interesting with Alucard fighting one of the Nazi lieutenants, upon the stranded ship.

Whilst there are several amazingly well done images throughout, at several points it becomes difficult to ascertain what’s happening due to the confusing art style.
