I mean… what more could I possibly ask for? I guess I could ask for more memorable characters or a plot that feels more original. Yes, some of the characters I felt were so unforgettable and truly beautifully written, the rest felt one-dimensional and characters I won’t remember. When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day.

I loved how The Art of Being a Princess played such a key role in the whole book. Each chapter of Frogged is titled after a chapter in The Art of Being a Princes, with a sarcastic subtitle by Imogene herself. Such as… So says The Art of Being a Princess, which Princess Imogene is supposed to be reading. But since she is neither particularly good nor all that beautiful, she skips her homework to visit the pond. There she meets a talking frog who claims to be a prince under a witch's spell. Imogene kindly kisses him to remove the spell - and gets turned into a frog instead! Vande Velde's (The Rumpelstiltskin Problem, reviewed above) fairy tale-like novel set once upon a time features two witches, 17-year-old Nola and her mother. The pair works for hire at odd jobs, and Continue reading » despite there being multiple narrators, there were no distinct voices. even though there were characters that were 80 and characters that were 8, there was no difference in the way they thought or spoke or described things that happened. this added to the issue of confusion; i would find myself forgetting who was speaking because each character soundly exactly like the other three.A couple of quotes from August who will go down as one of my all-time favorite fictional friends . . . . . What ultimately for me really rather detracted from the novel (which is very strongly conceived and well if not spectacularly written) was the rather high levels of melodrama – it feels like all the characters are permanently moving from one crisis to another in a way which took this away from the level of literary fiction and closer to soap opera, while also diluting the impact of the individual events. There are other acts of violence in the past that have altered the path of this family. Joan remembers one such act. As she grows through her teenage years, she finds comfort in her gift of artwork, portrait painting, and the healing power of her paintbrush... The novel is told in third person by Hazel (Myron’s wife), Miriam and August her two daughters and in first person by Joan (Miriam’s oldest daughter). Joan’s sister Mya is the only female member of the tight family group not to have her own chapters, while the other key characters are Miriam’s husband Jaxson (who serves in the Marines including in the Gulf) and Derek August’s son.

Vivian Vande Velde

Vande Velde writes with the crisp diction of a practiced storyteller who knows her text will likely be read aloud." Frog, frogging: an ornamental loop-fastening for a coat, used with a frog-button, associated with Brandenbourgs; Frog-button, olivette: a spindle-shaped braided button to pass through frog fastenings.”

The Details

The story is told in third person limited point-of-view. We are directly in Imogene’s head the whole time and gooood gracious, did the girl have a some hilarious, snarky monologue. Half of my enjoyment of the book was just being inside her head. Imogene's misadventures as an amphibian are entertaining. There's enough light humor throughout to keep readers hooked." While Imogene is at the traveling theater she makes witty and humorous remarks and gives advice to Luella who makes the mistake of following Bertie to a traveling theater. Imogene's funnier than I expected and I really enjoyed her perspective as a princess trapped in a frog's body. I kind of felt bad for frogs and their bad wraps even though I will still never get near any of them or at least not any toads *shudder*. Her poems have appeared in Collective Unrest, Jet Fuel Review, Minerva Rising, Women’s Arts Quarterly, Transitions and Apogee Journal, among others.

The Brick Matching Guide - Forterra

Through a series of unfortunate events, poor Imogene gets tossed in with a traveling theater group. This theater group isn’t exactly made up of the nicest people though. Most of them were downright infuriating. But they were supposed to be. And some of their antics were quite amusing. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for Imogene getting tossed in with these rotten, clueless people though. Thankfully, not all of them were straight up caricatures. There was some depth and even a character arc that really brought heart to the tale. Very clean! This was clearly geared for a young audience, and everything stays very lighthearted. That’s a teeny tiny bit of kissing, but nothing major. The things women do for the sake of their daughters. The things women don't. The shame of it all. The shame of her daughter's rape, the shame of her husband's violence, her nephew's psychopathy. Frogged Book Review – Fairy Tale Central Frogged Book Review – Fairy Tale Central

This was a difficult story to read. So much death, racism, tragedy and loneliness. Yet what I was left with was the power of sisterhood, of self-love, of believing in God-given talents, of understanding and the of amazing healing powers of community. I loved the depictions of a city and a culture I am an outsider to, but can appreciate and celebrate with the author. I felt like I was there with these sisters as they endured hardship after hardship and persevered with grit and determination. I am not use to being befuddled about a story, but I was here. I would have preferred a more linear book, but then again, I was not the author, nor was I sitting atop her shoulder waiting to amass her thoughts. I would imagine this book providing many discussions for members of book clubs, as perhaps together they could puzzle out the way things were flowing in this story.
