About this deal

Opus is made to grind for all brew methods, from espresso to cold brew. Ode is built to dominate brewed coffee, which means that Ode is not suitable for espresso. After getting comfortable with the machine and running through a couple pounds of beans for a good season, I did some Fellow Ode cuppings vs my Comandante. I tested primarily with lighter to medium roasts. The Comandante brews have more flavor but also more acidity; currently I'm enjoying the balance of clarity and flavor in the Ode+SSP brews the most. Its giving me a flavorful cup that's got acidity without being too sour, along with prominent and enjoyable flavors of fruit/nut/chocolate. If I throw a little cream (it tastes good, sue me) into a good South American coffee it's almost like I'm drinking a hot chocolate. The Fellow Ode Grinder is quite stunning, having the usual Fellow aesthetics. It is remarkably compact, with a measurement of 4.25″ by 9.5″ by 9.5″. You shouldn’t have a problem fitting this grinder on your bench. However, its portability does come at the cost of a bean hopper. The Fellow Ode Grinder is designed such that it is a single-dose grinder. Hence, it can only hold a maximum of 80g of beans. The Fellow Ode is remarkably easy to use. It has an on/off switch and a large stepped dial on the front with 31 settings ranging from fine to coarse. Grinding is as simple as weighing out your beans, selecting your desired grind size on the dial, and pushing the start button.

Exit Chute/Anti Static: The anti static technology will work best for about 60 cycles before it needs to be cleaned to operate at its peak performance. To clean it, remove the catch cup, and use the Fellow cleaning brush (or another cleaning brush such as a clean makeup brush or a clean paint brush) and “swipe” around the inside of the exit chute (where the coffee grounds come out). This will clean the chute and help the anti-static mechanisms work well. Some users have ran into issues with beans jamming up their burrs. Again, this is an issue that seems more prevalent in earlier models that I've never once experienced in 3lbs+ of beans through the grinder and can't really comment on. This grinder isn’t just the newest addition to the Fellow Family but also the sleekest. It is a beautifully modeled powerhouse that is built on a pedestal. With the widespread popularity of Ode Brew Grinder, there’s so much to look out for in this grinder. Extraction Tests: We measured brewed coffee samples with a coffee refractometer to evaluate the level of total dissolved solids (TDS) as a measure of grind quality. We are happy to report that this issue has been fixed with the latest rendition; the Fellow Ode Gen 2. The Gen 2 has a new set of 64mm flat burrs, designed by Fellow. These burrs are able to grind finer, with a grind range of 250-300 microns and up. In comparison, the original burrs could only manage 550 microns and up. The grind range covers brew methods such as Aeropress, Pour Over, Drip Coffee, French Press, and Cold Brew. To solve this, add one or two drops of water to your bean, but it comes at the cost of reduced coffee retention, making you enjoy a well-grinded and nutritious coffeeOpus can grind for all brew methods, from the finest espresso for a true 9-bar shot all the way to the coarsest coffee for cold brew. FLAT BURRS Professional-grade stainless steel flat burrs reduce grind time and heat generation while increasing grind particle consistency. When it comes to operations, there are some quirks and a couple learning curves, but overall I've been pleased and found it to be a pretty smooth experience. Here's some of the most common quirks or issues that I have noticed, or read about online:

Note: r/coffee would not let me post there. He doesn't believe r/coffee should be a place to discuss coffee. Since this review does cross over into the grinder's application for espresso I figured I would comment here. Although this post clearly fits under their sidebar as stated: Measurements were done with Jonathan Gagne's app, pictures taken with a DSLR, and lens correction applied with Photoshop. Note that these densities are weighted by the grind size assuming mass proportional to volume, same as the grind size app. So it's not the number of particles of a particular size but rather the mass of the coffee found in grounds of that size. Used the same numbers/formulas as that app so these measurements aren't without their caveats. However I think the relative comparisons are still useful. A larger catch cup that can hold 100g of ground coffee, enough for 12 cups of brewed coffee at the golden ratio. This is because the dial is trying to push the burrs closer together, which may compact residual coffee in the burrs.
