About this deal

My thanks to Zooloo’s Book Tours and author Alan Gorevan for a complimentary copy of “The Book Club Murders”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. I absolutely loved this book! The story is expertly crafted, with a captivating plot and relatable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller. It drew me in with the title, especially being a book lover, and then I read the exciting and secretive blurb.

Neighbour, Louise, invites her over for the local book club where she meets more of her neighbours. The main character, Charley Carpenter, is a strong character who finds herself in the middle of a real life murder mystery. Her reading group calls themselves the Agathas after one of the most famous mystery authors, Agatha Christie. It’s not long before Charley realizes there is a serial killer out there and they are copying the murders from the Agatha’s reading discussion books. Why do you think it was so important for Amy & Marion to gather the book club ladies after it was announced that it was Toni who was murdered?I found this book to be thrilling and set a new pace to a coach series. Charley is my new favorite protagonist and the Agatha's book club is a group I would join even with murder swirling around. I personally liked that the murders were tied in with a variety of novels that the group read. I also loved how the romance/heat between Charley and Marc was instant but one they both feared. While the main cast is white, there are some key Chinese-origin characters. Through some of the townspeople’s interactions with them, we get a glimpse of how racism is a part of life for anyone who looks or sounds different. As some of this is pretty offensive (and realistic too), it provides an indicator of the said characters’ narrow-mindedness. This is exactly how racism works in the actual world. In The Book Club Murders, someone is killing the Agathas and Charlie, an Agatha herself, will investigate. The investigative work puts her on the way of Detective Mac Trenault, not one of her favorite people in the world – that is, until he turns into one of her favorites❤. That was my favorite part of the book, the romance. Usually, romance takes a long time to develop in cozy mysteries but not in here. Janet’s son Dean calls Shirley looking for his mom, waking her up. Would you have helped him or reacted like Shirley? It’s hard to classify this book. It’s not quite cuddly enough to be classed as cosy and doesn’t have enough depth to be a bona fide police procedural. There’s a good mystery element, but it doesn’t go full tilt there either. I fully expected at least one member of the book club to turn Miss Marple and start investigating the case herself, but perhaps these ladies aren’t crime fans? In fact, we never discover their reading tastes, save for a mini-discussion about AS Byatt’s Possession in chapter one.

A home-run debut . . . With action, adventure and murders involving mystery books, it is sure to please every cozy mystery fan! I highly recommend adding The Book Club Murders to your Fall reading list.” —The Cozy Mystery Journal I had expected the book club to pay a greater role in the plotline. ( A part of me had expected a closed-door mystery where the members of a book club are rounded up by a book-hating maniac, or maybe by someone who hated the book chosen for discussion. Wouldn’t that have been something!? 😄) However, there’s only one scene set during an actual book club meeting, which was entertaining, no doubt. The references to books are also limited only to the start. So what I got was good, but I wanted far more, considering the title. Gorevan keeps the mystery alive as to who whether or not there is more than one murderer and who they may be! I had a guess and I was wrong! The bodies start to add up, but why are all these people being murdered? In this read you get to tag along with Izzy who moves into her Aunts house. She’s starting a new life to get away from her controlling boyfriend. Along this new journey navigating a life alone, she meets the ladies in a book club. While getting to know them the twists start coming and do not stop. Charley Carpenter is my kind of woman—smart, strong, and independent. She makes an engaging and utterly appealing new detective. Book some time with Charley today!” —Michael Lister, New York Timesbestselling author of Blood Oath

Success!

I like how Adam also gets a voice. Usually, the abusive ex appears to us only through the eyes of the victim. But seeing Adam's thoughts and actions from his own perspective was creepy and added greatly to the experience. When the books are down I would count on Charley to make it exciting. I enjoyed the variety in pace of the book, I felt as though I was on an epic ride through the book. Lovejoy, Hannah (20 November 2020). The Book Club Murders by Alan Gorevan | Goodreads

I've never read anything quite like this book. I wasn't expecting the plot to go the way it did. The language and romance is stronger than a regular cozy but I found it a nice change of pace. There was a little too much detail for my liking which made it start off slow for me. Leslie Nagel is a good author and I plan on reading more of her. When the news stated a body was found at the Common, would you have gone to see the body? Why or why not? When a body is found murdered and staged, Detective Marc Tenault is called in to lead the investigation. Charley and Marc have history, bad history. But she has also harbored a crush on him since high school. When a second body is found and Charley makes the connection that the staged scenes are right out of her book clubs reading list, her and Marc must team up, because it looks like one of the Agatha's is doing more than reading about murder.. Although mixing with the most influential women in town has its advantages, Charley finds the endless gossip a high price to pay. But after two women with close ties to the Agathas are brutally murdered, everyone falls under threat—and suspicion. When key evidence indicates that both murders are the work of the same hand, Charley realizes that the killer has arranged each corpse in perfect imitation of crime scenes from the Club’s murder mystery reading list. She uses her membership in the Club to convince Detective Marcus Trenault to use her as an inside informant. Not that he could stop her anyway. Then there’s another death and the police investigation, led by curmudgeonly DCI Barrett, ratchets up a notch or two. Could there really be a serial killer on the loose – something that second in command DI Palmer seems particularly keen on proving? As the police seek their perpetrator, the women of the book club seem over keen to keep their own counsel. As we get to know them better, all manner of skeletons begin tumbling willy nilly out of their closets.

Who doesn’t love a book club? And who isn’t thrilled by the idea of a murder or three? If you also love the idea of murder among the book club members, then The Book Club Murders is the book for you.But this story was different from the cute cozy that I expected. While a few cozy elements are present – small-town setting, amateur detective, quirky characters, murders take place off screen – The Book Club Murders felt more like a traditional murder mystery. And that’s not a criticism, because I enjoy many traditional mysteries and police procedurals. Charley and her police detective Marc are appealing, intelligent characters – and talk about chemistry! When Izzy relocates from the city to the seaside town of Dun Laoghaire to escape a controlling ex, she thinks she's found the perfect haven. The town welcome her and she's soon invited to the local book club - but the group is established and tight-knit and each has their own issues that drag Izzy down. First of all, I do have to wonder how I haven’t read any of this author’s books before! I read this book in one sitting, it was such a great story. The murdered is staging his/her murders after the murder in one of these books. After the first two Murders, Charley Carpenter, a member of the group convinced Marcus Trenault, the homicide detective to use her as an informer in the investigation. Those lover's of romance will be please with the conflicts between Charley and Marcus. There enough twists and turns to make every one happy. The ending will surprise you. I highly recommend this book.
