About this deal

I bought this tool for recording our band's studio sessions, but also for taking it outdoors to our busking missions. This little thing does everything I ever wanted from a recording device. In a future firmware update to the H8, Zoom should rename the app currently called “Podcast” app to be named “Live” as explained earlier in this article. Finally, for the standard modules, the EXH‑6 has no microphones but accepts two external inputs via combo XLRs. Of course, I love that the H8 can record proper 48 kHz sampling frequency and 24-bit resolution (see 48kHzAllance.com and also my 2015 article Understanding 24-bit vs 16-bit audio production & distribution) in addition to higher sampling frequencies like 96 kHz (which —for the human voice— I can only justify if you plan to use slow motion audio in post) and lower ones that I don’t recommend at all, no matter what, not even for recording audio for virtual PBX/IVR interactive telephony production, as explained mathematically at 48KhzAlliance.com. You can monitor level meters and hit REC,PLAY, and STOP in each H8 application mode. Just insert the BTA-1 to your H8 and connect to your iOS device. The H8 Control App is freely available from App Store.

Now several months in after first buying this unit and still very happy with it, in general. However, the touchscreen is a real pain to make fine adjustments to volume, etc. So dont expect to do much on that. Also, strange thing seems to happen when I have it plugged in via usb to the mains supply and I connect a phantom large diaphram mic as well as any other phantom 48v mic - seems that the large diaphram drains a little too much power sometimes and the H8 just shuts down unexpectedly. Lost some work that way.I am not the type of guy who likes to spend too much time in tweaking knobs. I prefer having a recording tool/gear that is reliable enough and easy to set up in a matter of minutes. Over the years, I have found out that the most important thing of a recording session is to be able to capture the vibe of the moment and not to get lost in the endless parameters that recording gear usually offers these days. I apply the same KISS principle (Keep-It-Simple-Stupid) with my guitar gear. Just a good cranked-up amp (Princeton) that I can control with my volume knob. This way I can focus on my music and not my sound. Monitoring is via the internal mono speaker unless headphones are plugged in, the volume of either being controlled by a virtual slider accessed at the top of each app’s home screen. The maximum headphone volume is pretty good with low‑impedance phones, but there’s only the one output. While that might be fine for field and music recording, it’s rather restricting for podcasting, since the guests won’t be able to hear any stings or effects played in, even if they can hear each other acoustically. Yes, a headphone splitter or standalone amp could be used, of course, but its more boxes, wires and inconvenience. If you like the idea of the Zoom H6, above, but want something cheaper than its predecessor the Zoom H5 is well worth a look. It's pretty similar but there are compromises to achieve a lower price. These include a less impressive screen, just two XLR/TRS inputs (as opposed to four on the H6), a shorter battery life, and only 32GB on the SD card. Built-in effects, including low-cut filtering, compression, and limiting Load effects via Guitar Lab software

The Field app is best suited for handheld recordings. Its simplistic GUI makes it easy to navigate, which is particularly useful to capture recordings on the fly.Services Guitar Workshop Electronic Repairs Workshop Music Store Events & Workshops Piano Showroom Music Lessons Recording Studio Audio that is input into the H8 can be directly monitored before it goes to your computer or iPad to get monitoring without latency. Different inputs: Look out for multiple inputs as this will allow you to mix up the microphones you use; from lav mics when presenting to XLR inputs for boom mics and shotgun mics to record ambient sound. Connect the H8 to your computer using a USB A to Micro USB cable. iOS users will also need an Apple Lightning to USB Camera adapter to connect.

With each input, we get to have an adjustable low cut filter (aka high pass filter) to cut rumble. This is very important and valuable feature The below recording is uncompressed 48 kHz WAV. Use Ethernet, wifi or unmetered data. https://www.provideocoalition.com/wp-content/uploads/H8-review-audio-flat.wav If necessary, update the recording format by taping the Paper icon (located next to the microphone icon) Each one gives us deeper control. The only important limitation to understand is that we can only choose one of these three things per input. You can assemble new files using the snap functions and crossfade options. Once you’re done, export your sound files in any popular audio format.

Once the EHX-8 capsule is released the H8 can be expanded to 10 input channels and there's a ton of additional stuff I will be able to do... Before unplugging the Zoom H8 from your computer, you’ll first need to “disconnect it” within the Audio Interface settings of the device. To do this, all you need to do is tap the cog (Settings)icon, tap Select, and then press Execute. Once complete, you can then disconnect from your computer or iOS device. The above multilingual video was produced by Zoom Europe, not by me. My test recording is ahead in this article. The XAH‑8 is a two‑channel (stereo) cardioid array, with movable capsules to allow either 90‑degree X‑Y or a near‑spaced quasi‑ORTF format. I consider the H8 to be a very good offering within its price range. I love its appearance, ease of operation, physical knobs for input gain, and the capability of seeing independent inputs on separate level meters in the Field app. I would definitely recommend it as is, and even more if Zoom accepts my suggestions for improvements in future updates.
