Associated Press. 1977-08-24 . Retrieved 2023-08-16. Heading in, Llamido was undefeated (11-0, 4 KOs). In retirement, Joiner spent 30 years with the Ohio State Highway Maintenance Department, rising to the position of superintendent. At the time of his death, the Queen City native resided in Springdale, a Cincinnati suburb. Monroe started his professional career with a perfect record of 20-0 before being stopped in a controversial split decision against Max Cohen. [7] Promoter Russell J Peltz would later say that Monroe won at least seven of the 10 rounds while Hagler, with a suspected broken nose, complained of not being able to breathe for much of the bout. But he did not grumble about the decision. “I learned a lot from Monroe and I’m still young,” he said afterwards. Hagler – who stopped Monroe in 12 rounds in their rematch and just two in their third fight – would not lose again for 11 years, when Sugar Ray Leonard won a contentious decision after 12 rounds to end one of the greatest reigns in middleweight history.

The Mexican fighter was scoring but not hurting Foster who was making the first defense of the title he won from previously undefeated Rey Vargas. In September, as Fury was preparing for Francis Ngannou, he signed to meet Oleksandr Usyk. The date was meant to be a secret, but it leaked out that the match between the two heavyweight kingpins would take place two days before Christmas in Riyadh. That fight is now off. In light of his showing on Saturday, the turnaround was too fast for the Gypsy King. But the fight will still come off, insists Warren, likely in late January or February. An intriguing undercard fight on the ESPN+ show finds six-foot-nine Antonio Mireles (8-0, 7 KOs) touching gloves with six-foot-seven Skylar Lacy (7-0, 5 KOs) in a 6-rounder. Willie "The Worm" Monroe (June 5, 1946 - June 22, 2019) [2] was a middleweight boxer who competed from 1969 to 1981. He was most notable for defeating Marvelous Marvin Hagler in 1976 before Hagler went on an eleven year undefeated streak. [3]There was a big upset this week at Tokyo’s venerable Korakuen Hall. In a bout for a regional WBO super bantamweight title, former IBF 122-pound title-holder TJ Doheny stopped Japhathlee Llamido in the opening round. Llamido, 23, was stepping up in class, but was yet a 5/1 favorite over a seemingly shopworn Doheny.

A three-time finalist in the National Golden Gloves Tournament in a day when the annual event in Chicago was attended by some of America’s best-known sportswriters, Joiner won the competition in 1962 in the 178-pound weight class and, for good measure, went on to win the AAU tournament before turning pro under the management of George Gainford who also handled Sugar Ray Robinson. Monroe was born in Alabama as the 13th of 17 children and spent his early years in Crestview, Florida. [3] He started boxing in Rochester, New York where he claimed an undefeated 43-0 amateur record. [4] He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the autumn of 1969 to train for his pro-debut. By Saudis, Arum didn’t mean the general population, but the fat-cat poobahs who control the purse strings over there. Indeed, five heavyweight fights preceded last Saturday’s crossover fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mireles is the “A” side here and will be favored in the 4/1 range, but this is a winnable fight for Lacy. Like many towering specimens in boxing history, Mireles has difficulty getting torque on his punches.Meet Willy the Worm. Fury’s promoter Frank Warren dissents. “That wasn’t [the real] Tyson Fury in there,” he says, attributing Fury’s performance to “a bad day at the office.”

The recent deaths of two former ring personalities went largely unnoticed. On June 26, Willie “The Worm” Monroe passed away at age seventy-three. Three weeks earlier, Billy Joiner drew his last breath at age eighty-one. Neither won a world title and Joiner was a mere journeyman, but both shared the ring with giants of their craft in one of boxing’s brightest eras.
