Several Whizzer engine models were made, including the H (1946-1948), J (1948-1949), 300 (1949-1952) and 700 (1952-1955). Each had its own improvements, but none of them progressed beyond the simple sidevalve layout. While the first engines made only 1-3/8 horsepower, the last models made close to 3 horsepower. It’s unknown exactly how many Whizzer engines were produced, but it’s suspected the number could be between 350,000 and 500,000. Production ceased in 1955-1956, but engine kits and parts were still being sold right into the 1960s. One of the Messerschmitt Me 262 jets was named "Marge" by the mechanics; the pilots later renamed it "Lady Jess IV." Ron has restored many cars, from Volkswagens to Messerschmitts, but since he was 10 years old there’s always been a motorcycle in his life. He grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and his first ride was a 2-stroke Jawa he bought from a neighbor. Freeman Army Airfield, the destination for many of the Operation Lusty-recovered captured Luftwaffe aircraft Whizzers were very popular in the late 1940’s and 50’s. It was every young boy’s dream to own one. The Whizzer Motor Company offered the motors in a kit that you could bolt on to about any bicycle of the time. The motor was a single cylinder four stroke that displaced 138cc and developed 3 brake horsepower. The gas tank was teardrop shaped and held five quarts. Whizzer gas tanks became very popular with the chopper builders in the 60’s and early 70’s. Power was transferred to the rear wheel by the use of two V belts.
The Topper was a long running anthology comic which ran from 1953 to 1990. Mergers with two other comics, Buzz and Sparky in 1975 and 1977, respectively, added characters from those comics to The Topper's roster. The Topper eventually merged with another comic The Beezer in 1990 becoming the Beezer and Topper, this new comic featured a number of characters from The Topper and ended in 1993 with a few of the characters going on to appear in two other comics The Beano and The Dandy. The comic included a number of comic strip adaptations of classic novels, mainly the works of H. Rider Haggard and Robert Louis Stevenson.
