Most of us know quite a lot of theory about the kids we serve, but this book bridged all that into practice – what to do about it. Steve taught in Sheffield for seventeen years before joining Wakefield LA as their Behaviour and Attendance consultant. He then moved to the National Strategies in a cross-phase role as Regional Adviser for Behaviour, Attendance and SEAL in Yorkshire and the Humber. Since 2011 Steve has been a freelance trainer and consultant. As a teacher, leader and teacher trainer, Paul has been working with the most difficult behaviours in the most challenging contexts for the last 27 years. Miraculously Paul studied at Homerton College Cambridge after countless attempts to sabotage his own education. He is a speaker in high demand engaging huge audiences in practical ways to transform their classrooms, relationships and schools. Paul also works with Leadership Teams to create seismic shifts in culture and behaviour. Tony now works as a trainer and consultant working with a range of providers and is still fascinated by behaviour and human relationships. Tony’s last role was as Headteacher of a PRU in the South-West of England. This was an extremely exciting opportunity to design a new school steeped in relational and Trauma Informed practice, from the furniture to the policies and practices. She has since built a career from combining her natural skills in relationship management and developing businesses with her creative flair. But I’m Not a Teacher He is a volunteer mentor for vulnerable teenagers in his local authority and has been a public advocate for the awareness of men’s mental health. He was formerly National Coordinator for the Scottish Association for the Teaching of English (SATE). Paul fell in love with teaching while working as a Teaching Assistant after leaving school. Teaching both inspired and drew him in due to the creativity, the variety and the cohort after cohort of utterly brilliant children he encountered.

He has twenty years of experience as a behaviour coach, working in classrooms alongside staff, developing their capacity to lead behaviour effectively. He also enjoys working with classroom-based and other support staff, enabling them to find their voice and role within a positive whole-school approach. How many ‘doggy doctor’ type TV reality shows have you seen where the people in charge of a dog need to learn the real lessons? And once they do, the dog’s behaviour falls beautifully into line. Having been in Education for 20 years, Hannah has worked at Local Authority Consultancy level for the National Strategies, as an Adviser for Achievement For All, as Senior Leader in several secondary schools, and most recently as Acting Principal at an Alternative Provision in the centre of Birmingham. She has ‘walked the walk’ on all she delivers, and has certainly used the many mistakes she has made as learning points in her career! But you don’t need to be a teacher, or indeed an educationalist of any hue, to get a lot from this book. Tara has 20 years of teaching experience working with a wide range of students from inner-city to international private schools. During that time she has led thriving departments as a Head of Department and Head of Faculty. Whilst teaching Tara created programmes to improve boy’s achievement and support successful transitions from primary to secondary school. She has led on Behaviour teams and Teaching and Learning teams. As well as mainstream achievements Tara has worked closely with Pupil Referral Units to develop student-centred Behaviour Management Strategies.

Hannah is known for her inspirational & charismatic training, combining her warmth as a person, passion for school improvement, served with a large portion of ‘realness’ and lived experience. As an Adviser and Coach Hannah is a valued and sought-after critical friend and para-professional. Her empathetic approach, delivered with honesty, underpinned with expertise & knowledge means she has supported many educational settings in whole school change as well as individual progression. Raymond began his career in education in the 1970s as a teenage flute tutor before becoming an English teacher. He was a head of department in three secondary schools and a Deputy Head Teacher before becoming a lecturer on one of Europe’s largest postgraduate teacher education programmes. For the last twenty years, he has worked on behaviour and ethos with thousands of student teachers and a host of schools from Shetland to Watford, and since leaving the university sector in 2017 he has been an independent consultant as well as a trainer with Pivotal Education. He also teaches part-time at a fantastic school in Glasgow.

Paul has delivered training and spoken on large stages all over the world, advised the English Department for Education on Teacher Standards, given evidence to the Education Select Committee and carried out extensive work with the Ministry of Justice on Behaviour and Restraint in Youth Custody. Raymond’s philosophy of education is deceptively simple but incredibly demanding: young people – their knowledge and experiences, their skills and abilities, their dreams and fears – are the starting point of what we do. He is an enthusiastic believer in student-centred approaches that first ask young people what they think, and is committed to relational and restorative practices in pastoral care.
