About this deal

As noted, Sony's excellent Headphones Connect app takes the wheel here. It's very good. Why? Adaptive Sound Control, optimized according to what you're doing, that's why –yes, these headphones learn how you use them and try to help. Don't like that it deploys ANC when it knows you're 'Staying'? That's fine, tap the cog in the app's Headphone Settings and you can deploy Ambient sound or turn all noise profiles off –and until you change it, that'll happen whenever you're sitting at your desk. When you pair a second or subsequent device (the headset has pairing information for other devices) Both the C700N earphones and the LinkBuds S work with Bluetooth 5.2, while the XM5 supports version 5.3.

Sony is showing exceptional talent in distilling its audio know-how down into ever diminutive earpieces. (Image credit: Future) To better test the comfort levels (and battery life claims) of the Sony WF-C700N, I wore them throughout the working day too –and they certainly did not disappoint. In your Headphones Connect app, while on the Status tab, select the right arrow next to Adaptive Sound Control.Clean your earbuds often to keep them in optimal condition. If the outside of the headset or the charging case get dirty, wipe them clean with a soft dry cloth. The truth is, both models represent five-star value for money, so you're unlikely to get either of them home and feel as though you've been ripped off. If we're going on which pair is cheaper and, when discounts are factored into the equation, which looks like a better deal, then the bargain-boosted WF-C500 just about take the cake. Let's be honest, though; both offer great value at their particular place in the market. Coming from the same manufacturer, it's no surprise that both sets of buds are practically the same in how they look and feel, although there are some key differences. The WF-C500 are slightly larger than their newer stablemates, the later model using Sony's 5mm driver compared with the C500's larger 5.8mm counterpart. The C500 (the dear old nanna in this scenario) offer phenomenal value for money, providing more features and far better audio fidelity at the price than almost any other rival on the market today. They're also so well made they'll probably continue giving you that same great sound decades from now. When the headset is placed in the charging case, the indicator (blue) on the charging case flashes 10 times.

Both opt for what we've dubbed the 'bean’ shape as opposed to the 'dangly stem’ alternative, both come with well-made, utterly functional plastic charging cases to match, and both fit pretty snugly into the ear without ever feeling as though they're about to drop into a nearby drain. The C500 are comfortable, but we were seriously impressed with how well the textured surface of the C700N provides grip upon insertion. This could be partly explained by the fact they use Sony’s own 5mm driver in their design – by comparison, the WF-C500 use a 5.8mm driver while the WF-1000XM4 boast a larger 6mm unit. When the headset is being removed from the charging case, you will hear a notification sound indicating that the connection is established from both headset units (or from the headset unit removed from the charging case when only one headset unit is removed) at the same time. Our own voice comes through sounding natural, and clear. During testing, we had to compete with the occasional gust of wind but it didn’t seem to affect the clarity of our conversations. In fact, compared to something like the JBL Live Pro 2 TWS, our voices sound more refined and more dynamic coming through the Sonys. Under the “Automatic Switching at My Place” heading, select the cog icon, then on the next screen register a location. Your headphones will detect where you are, and the next time you are at your registered location, they will activate Noise Cancelling and other features based on previous experience. Enjoy up to 15 hours * of listening thanks to the handy charging case – get 7.5 hours from the earbuds and another 7.5 hours using the charging case. Make sure you have the latest firmware updated on your headphones so any bug fixes and improvements will be applied.

Depending on the computer you are using, the built-in Bluetooth adaptor may need to be turned on. If you do not know how to turn on the Bluetooth adaptor or are unsure if your computer has a built-in Bluetooth adaptor, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the computer. The multi-function button on the WF-C700N beats any capacitive touch option I've tried. (Image credit: Future) Sony WF-C700N review: DesignOnce Bluetooth devices are paired, there is no need to pair them again, except in the following cases: Before you dive into our analysis, just note that we respectively refer to the WF-1000XM5 and WF-C700N as the XM5 and C700N throughout the comparison for the sake of brevity. Usage hours may be different from the time described depending on the setting for the headset functions and usage conditions. All have access to a 5-band EQ in the app, which means you can tune their sound signatures to your preference.
