About this deal

I am disappointed with Two Brothers. The premise of the story sounded really interesting from an historical point of view, and the characters seemed to have so much potential. But the reality was just plain awkward.

Two Brothers by Ben Elton – review | Fiction | The Guardian

On the positive side, the idea behind the story is a good one. We often hear of twins separated at birth, but what about twins united at birth? Especially if these twins are born on the same day as the Nazi party got its name. The idea immediately raises intriguing questions of nature or nurture, some of which are explored in the story. Rachel Simon’s sister Beth is a spirited woman who lives intensely and often joyfully, despite her intellectual disability. Beth spends her days riding the buses in her Pennsylvania city. One day, Beth asked Rachel to accompany her on the buses for an entire year; the book is the chronicle of that remarkable time.” The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family by Mary S. Lovell Auggie is far from ordinary. Born with a terrible facial abnormality, he has been homeschooled by his parents his entire life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, Auggie’s parents are sending him to a real school. Two Brothers by Ben Elton – review | Ben Elton | The Guardian

However, I didn't feel the language used represented the time period but I'm not sure if Elton did this deliberately as he does tend to not follow the rules generally. I also felt it was a bit of a fluffy war read, if you want to read about WW2 without actually getting your hands dirty or your heart broken this is the book for you. Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe (one of the most popular boys in school) journey through time and space in search of Meg’s father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.” Four adventurous siblings—Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie—step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia, a land frozen in eternal winter and enslaved by the power of the White Witch. But when almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change…and a great sacrifice.” Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder Set in 1914, this historical fiction book is based on the true story of one of the first American female deputy sheriffs. Following a run-in with a factory owner, Constance Kopp and her sisters fight to protect their family and home. And these tough women prove they are up to the challenge. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy It is particularly annoying because the sincerity of what Elton is trying to achieve here is so apparent. There is none of the slightly doubtful utilisation of the Holocaust that I found in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, as if it existed solely to make the reader upset and disgusted by any means necessary.A heartbreaking and poignant multigenerational saga of the reproductive bonds of destruction and the powerful force of forgiveness. A masterpiece that breathtakingly tells a story of alienation and connection, power and abuse, devastation and renewal.” The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin This novel evokes twenties and thirties Berlin with ease and panache, with characters who feel so much more real than many of Elton's previous creations. By turns heartbreaking, endearing and hilarious, I found myself wanting to know more of these characters and their lives once the novel was finished. From the stoic and heroic lady doctor, to the mystery of the brothers' identities, there is much to love about Two Brothers, and it's worth a read just for the history refresher alone - you may wish to have Wikipedia on standby to read about some of the notable events alluded to throughout the book. He was the youngest of five children and his destiny was always to farm. He married Cynthia in 1965 and has three sons and four grandchildren.
