About this deal

How do I run my wheel? Do I force the cassette with the spacer? Is this some compatibility change that I don't know about? If you're buying a new road bike with the latest Tiagra, there's no doubt about it, you're getting a better bike for your money. Verdict It is all dependant on whether or not you have a short or medium cage rear derailleur and if you are running a double or triple set up. If you have a double and a short cage derailleur then you could just about get away with an 11/30 but it will require some adjusting, if you have a medium cage derailleur then you could get away with up to an 11/32 with a double or 11/30 with a triple, it may work but I think you'd be pushing it to use an 11/32 with a triple ring set up. Quote: 'I have what is mainly a 10sp triple Shimano 105 setup (5703) and a Shimano XT Shadow 9sp (M772) rear derailleur on my 'winter' bike. In my experience ...' Tiagra is the highest-grade Shimano groupset that still offers a triple chainset for fans of super-wide-range gear systems

The figures for 11spd are 2.7mm x 1.4 = ~3.78mm pitch. The mech ratio is the same 1.4 but the shifter is pulling less cable, so the chain movement is less. A key difference between 105 and Tiagra is that the 105 is intended for 11-speed and the large chainring has teeth between 46 and 53. The Tiagra shifters have been redesigned in line with the higher spec Shimano ranges and now all cables run internally underneath the bar tape, this is the first time a Tiagra groupset has offered this feature and it really adds to the overall look and feel of the groupset. Shimano has also re-designed the Tiagra hood shape to be much smaller and easier to grip making the shifting and braking more accessible and fluid. The Tiagra range also offers a flat bar shifting option for anyone looking to run a flat bar road bike. You won't be able to get any larger than 53 teeth with Shimano, unless you're prepared to go up to Dura-Ace. Phase 2 paired a 9 spd Alivio MTB mech. with a 34 tooth cassette. Not really a success but that may have been down to a cable kink problem. The other major difference between the two groupsets is that the 105 brakes are considerably better than Tiagra ones. They are a real highlight both in terms of all-out power and fingertip control. We have talked about this before, so we’ll be brief with this answer. A groupset is a group of parts that are all made to the same quality.

It's both better looking and better performing than the previous Tiagra, and in the changes that Shimano has made, the gap to the more expensive 105 has been significantly narrowed. The most notable improvement is the updated shifter bodies, which function very similarly to the more expensive groupsets, with the same shifter body shape. And the new chainset is a much better-looking bit of kit too. It doesn't look cheap, it looks expensive. That's good. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed Should you decide that you want to start with the 105 version, you will arguably have more options. Or at least, upgrading can be done more easily.

The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions. The 105 and Tiagra dual-pivot brakes are where things get interesting. The 105 brakes are actually heavier than the Tiagra brakes. That doesn’t mean you should save money here, as the 105 brakes offer a few advantages over the Tiagra brakes. I'm not sure. I've bodged plenty things to an adequate standard before - if you're buying relatively expensive new kit it's nice if it works sweetly! Keep the mech but change the cassette (and chain) for 11spd items? Tiagra brakes have also seen a good amount of improvement and an increase in stopping power. However, they aren't of the same quality as 105.
