About this deal

The characters in the novel were interesting enough but felt a tad underdeveloped, predictable, and boring. I really liked the protagonist we had in Jess and felt like she had amazing potential, but I’m still undecided on whether the book brought out her true character well. For a character so intelligent and self aware, it didn’t make sense to me that Jess struggled to put such obvious clues together in the book. Things were very tell and not show, the hint dropping wasn’t subtle at all which didn’t leave a lot for the reader to work with which is a shame. It's been a longgg while since I was ever interested in a YA mystery book. I mostly read thrillers and mystery novels that deal with more adult themes, so the way this YA mystery was able to intrigue me from the synopsis alone was definitely a welcomed surprise. I enjoyed a lot of the aspects in this book– the mystery, the plot twists, the characters, the writing and the pacing. I genuinely did not expect a lot of the plot twists in this book. Even though I guessed the identity of the murderer before the big reveal, I was still fairly surprised by a lot of the revelations. Just because things are easy for you, doesn’t mean they’re easy. Just because people are good to you, doesn’t mean they’re good. You can’t close your eyes and then claim ignorance – people who let bad stuff happen are just as bad as the people who do bad stuff.”

This Book Kills by Ravena Guron follows Jess, a scholarship student at an exclusive boarding school only for the elite. The thing is, Jess might have played a part in the murder of one of the boarding school's most popular students. Lots of moments where you do question motives, alibis, stories and characters. Great teenage introduction to the murder mystery genre. The lovebirds’ happiness is short-lived however as Hugh is found murdered on the school grounds. The rumour mill erupts with theories as to who could have killed one of the most popular pupils in the school.

Jess is telling us this story from the present, after it's all over. So there are touches that bring us out of the immediacy of the murders and remind us that the narrator already knows the solution, and often does this with humour. Clementine-Tangerine Briggs, cuyos padres se dedican al negocio de las frutas y quizás pensaron que el crecimiento de su hija iba a ser proporcional al de la ganancia con la venta de tangerinas. Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! Part of the Solve Your Own Mystery seri... So the story follows Jess, a girl who goes to an elite boarding school. She’s your typical nobody, doesn’t really have any friends except for one girl named Clem (short for Clementine). When a short story she has co-written with one of her classmates, Summer, is used for inspiration of an actual murder, her whole world is turned upside down. Together with her friend and the people she gets close to along the way, they try to unmask the murderer. But she has to be fast, or else she might just be the next one to get killed…

What I really liked about Jess was her relentless and curious nature. I loved how she wasn´t ashamed of where she came from; growing up poor; even though many people bullied her for it. I feel like she made loads of smart decisions in this book (with a few dumb ones sprinkled in there obviously) and I overall really enjoyed her character.

Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments I’d love to go to book festivals – like Edinburgh International Book Festival, and Hay Festival – they always look so incredible! And I went to YALC last year for the first time and had the most amazing day meeting other YA authors and readers – it would be an absolute dream to do a panel. I’d also love to do events at bookshops and libraries all around the country – explore different areas and meet readers all over. I’d love to do all the events!I also enjoyed the setting, as I said I love mysteries set at boarding schools, and this one wasn’t different. There is something about the isolated setting and the fact that the main character/teen sleuth must know or at least know of the murderer that always gets me. I'll make it clear from the start: I did not kill Hugh Henry Van Boren. I didn't even help. Well, not intentionally. When Hugh Henry Van Boren, one of the most popular and richest kids in Jess Choudhary's school, is found dead, the student body is left reeling and wondering who the murderer could be... At once fun, twisty and insightful, This Book Kills is a gripping murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.” Adiba Jaigirdar, YA Book Prize winning author of Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
