About this deal

Noi is a little boy who is often left alone when his father goes out on his boat to fish. One day after a storm, Noi goes out exploring along the beach. He finds a baby whale. He knows the baby whale needs to be in the water, so he takes it home and places it in the bathtub. Afraid his father will be angry, Noi is able to keep his whale a secret. But the secret is soon found out. Dad is not angry. He realizes his little boy is lonely. Father and son return the whale to the sea. The next morning, they are at the breakfast table together. They even go for a picnic by the sea. The Storm Whale is one of those rare picture books that evokes loneliness with such fragility, and that conveys such feeling and beauty that it cannot fail to move its readers… an absolute gem, do not miss out." Once children have become familiar with the story they could tell it to you, using the pictures as a guide. It is fine if children not yet reading use their own words for this. Talk about the story Noi, who was waiting patiently all this while, decided to look out for his dad in a boat. He put on his boots and stormed out of his house to find his dad. Noi was waiting for his dad The Storm Whale is a gentle reminder that sometimes you need to make an effort to stay connected to each other. Noi’s dad is plodding through life but it takes the Storm Whale to make him realise that he needs to make more time to share with Noi.

Noi decides to go down to the beach to see if anything has been washed up on the shore after a particularly bad storm. Incredibly, Noi discovers a small whale beached on the sand. Boy vindt een aangespoelde walvis. Hij verstopt hem in de badkuip zodat zijn vader er niet achter komt dat hij de walvis mee naar huis heeft genomen en zodat de walvis alsnog in het water ligt. Nostalgic and gentle, this book is beautifully crafted, with filmic, sometimes panoramic illustrations and a plot line that will give the reader goosebumps (in a good way) — so strong is the message and sense of there being a true friendship between boy and whale. So after a wonderful book launch, hosted by our brilliant colleagues at Simon and Schuster, and in anticipation of our cosy Christmas story time, where Benji will be reading us his heart-warming story, I wanted to find out a little bit more about the man behind the books… LM Intensely atmospheric, full of biting cold, tender detail and warm light, this is a book to cuddle up with” – The Guardian

Este libro refleja lo mucho que las personas necesitamos estar cerca de otras así digamos que no, y que necesitamos sentirnos queridas o querer.

Noi paints pictures of the whale when he is gone. Can you paint your own pictures of whales and other ocean creatures? We in this house love the sea and any stories about it, so this picture book caught our eye immediately.

El niño se sentía tan solo, que encontro a la ballena, la cuidó y se hizo cargo, porque sentía que por fin estaba haciendo algo y que tenía compañía. I don’t remember a huge number of picture books from when I was little but Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea was a big favourite.
