About this deal

Each picture-and-caption pair is more mysterious and suggestive than the last, and will provide children and adults alike with hours of entertainment. If possible, one small spiral-bound notebook for each child (otherwise, loose-leaf paper works fine) illustrations. 14 captions. A picture book, then? Yes, but each scene is a loaded gun and you are the trigger. After you have finished the story (and don’t worry if it is not completely cohesive and brilliant—storytelling in this fashion takes a lot of practice!), debrief with your students. What was hard for them? What was easy? What was fun? Reinforce the idea that they have created a brand-new story together as a community, starting with only a tiny seed of an idea presented by Chris Van Allsburg. Tell them that you will be practicing this activity again, using the same story idea.

Este es un libro con micro cuentos increíbles, acompañados de ilustraciones asombrosas. Todo me dejó perplejo, las 14 historias y los 14 dibujos. Todo es maravilloso. Give different pairs/groups an illustration or caption from the book (or both) and ask them to collectively write a story. This is not a typical picture book because beyond the introduction is there is no story. Unlike a regular narrative with a clear beginning, middle and end that focuses on one or a group of character, this story is a collection of captivating illustrations that don't connect to each other. The award-winning author of Jumanji and The Polar Express, Chris Van Allsburg, challenges young readers to use their creativity and imagination in this one-of-a-kind book that asks readers to finish the story. This man reminds us that children’s picture books can still be works of art if done correctly. As author and illustrator, his books are a perfect display of the beauty of the picture book medium. If you love your children, cultivate their imaginations with these books. They will thank you.

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Paperback) - Waterstones

Enticed to come up with their own endings, readers will marvel at the mystery behind these lasting drawings and the charm of an everchanging narrative. I read it when I was 9 or 10 years old for a school project. I remember being really creeped out by the pictures, but also really fascinated. I recently discovered it again, and it's just as eerie as I remember it to be. Each one is creepy and strange and there's so much ambiguity and ah. So cool. So much imagination. I love it. In the picture 'Archie Smith, Boy Wonder' we can see orbs floating and apparently speaking. In 'Just Dessert' the pumpkin is glowing with an otherworldly light. Science Fiction

Byrne, Terry (June 22, 2008). "They are hoping for a storybook ending". The Boston Globe . Retrieved November 18, 2011. Try writing a story about one of the pictures, with the idea that you want to convey one particular emotion. Next, using the same picture, write the story with a completely different emotion in mind. Parents should know that this book may be a bit too confusing for smaller children since the only evidence of a story for each image portrayed in this book is the title of the story and a small caption giving a brief dialogue from the story. Small children might have a hard time trying to understand what each story is about since there is no clear evidence of an actual story going on for each image.

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick - Goodreads

We looked through this in bed and the nephew made up some stories to go with the pictures. For not having robots in the pictures, they had a whole lot of monsters in them. The next day, I made some copies of the pictures and we sat down and they had to write a story based off one of the pictures. I had to scribe for the nephew. Ask your students to carry their notebooks around for a week and write down ideas when they feel inspired. Have them share their ideas with one another. Discuss how it felt to catch an idea right away—did they find that they began having more ideas? Or remembering more ideas?Following the letter, fourteen mysterious and haunting images are reproduced, each with a title and a suggestive caption. Next to a drawing of a boy fast asleep in his bedroom with five small, round lights hovering in the air above him are the title “Archie Smith, Boy Wonder” and the caption “A tiny voice asked, ‘Is he the one?'” An image of a huge ocean liner pushing into a narrow canal is titled “Missing in Venice” and captioned “Even with her mighty engines in reverse, the ocean liner was pulled further and further into the canal.” The picture from “The Third-Floor Bedroom”, accompanied by the words “It all began when someone left the window open,” shows a room that looks completely normal but for the wallpaper bird that seems to be coming to life and flying off the wall! Me fascinó como con esto tu imaginación trabaja el doble y empiezas a pensar el por qué de casa situación ocurrida en el libro. De como se llegó a ese punto y de que es lo qué está pasando en realidad. Have the children use ideas they have written in their notebooks to write stories of their own. When they are finished, ask them to illustrate what they have written.
