About this deal

Matthew from Goonhammer has chosen colder blue-grey tones for the highlights on the armour of his Lion, which work in tandem with rich golds, natural greens, and subtle weathering to ground this legendary knight. Marko Miladinović Primarchs aren’t ones for subtlety, and Jon from Pintureando Miniatures has made his Lion stand out with striking colour blends on the armour and metal, and source lighting effects to create glowing elements on the Watchers in the Dark and Fealty. Kudos on the use of the unhelmeted but cowled head, too. Jennie Ruskin The answer to the proliferation of tanks on the battlefields of the Horus Heresy is clear – more tanks, but fitted with neutron lasers capable of obliterating enemy armour in a single shot. First up is the Cerberus Heavy Tank Destroyer, an adaptation of the Spartan chassis with a triple-barrelled neutron laser battery that can take a hefty dose of punishment while spitting out radioactive death. Sicaran Venator Tank Hunter

Many of their successors have risen to fame, like the bloodthirsty Flesh Tearers. Their Chapter Master, Gabriel Seth, is a great example of the way named successor Chapters work in the new edition – gaining all of the benefits of their parent Chapter’s Detachment but without the ability to mix Epic Heroes . If you look at the design on the shield, it has a single-headed eagle representing the Emperor, and a serpent in its mouth depicting evil, Chaos, or even Horus himself,” Dom told us. Imagine being so mad at your son that you draw yourself eating him on your own shield. Marko from Craftworld Studios has painted a breathtaking Lion El’Jonson that makes use of subtle and unusual contrasting colours in the shadows. The red and green shadows in the armour and the gold combine to create an otherworldly effect on this larger-than-life figure. Máryse Ouellet The Deathwatch are not a Chapter per se, but rather an organisation that takes the best and brightest of the Space Marine Chapters for dedicated xenos hunting. The demands of their missions – which might find them chasing down Aeldari one day and rooting out a Genestealer Cult another – require flexibility above all, and all Deathwatch Veterans are trained to enact varying Mission Tactics at the perfect moment to succeed against impossible odds. This special launch set also features three Bladeguard Veterans to flank the Lion, two gorgeous art prints featuring illustrations from Arks of Omen: The Lion , and a sheet of Dark Angels transfers to detail his retinue.*Continuing the exploration of the Dark Angels’ many heraldic choices, Annie has painted the Son of the Forest with his armour split in half between the traditional forest green of the Dark Angels and the rich bone-coloured armour of the Deathwing – the same colour scheme used by the Angels of Redemption successor Chapter. Fletcher Giles Dark Angels Deathwing: This army list focuses on using the Deathwing Veterans to hold objectives and to prevent the enemy from advancing. Lion El’Jonson can be used to support the Deathwing Veterans with his psychic powers and his sword. Buoyed by their ability to hold objectives to the very last man, the Deathwing can teleport right into the heart of the battle as an immovable barricade, safe in the knowledge that points will be scored no matter the cost. Outflank lumbering opponents with the Sicaran Venator Tank Hunter***, a nimble armoured vehicle fitted with a neutron beam laser. It’s the perfect candidate for speeding ahead of your main force and tearing through the vulnerable side and rear armour of hapless enemy war machines. But beneath their boisterous behaviour and irrepressible wildness, the Space Wolves are as valiant as any other Space Marines, despite their disdain for the dictates of the Codex Astartes. Instead of Guilliman-approved battle formations, they form their warriors into specialist units like Wolf Guard and Blood Claws, even in the age of Cawl’s Primaris Space Marines.

Dark Angels Vanguard: This army list focuses on using fast and mobile units to harass the enemy and disrupt their plans. Lion El’Jonson can be used to lead the Vanguard into battle and to provide them with support. The Dark Angels don’t focus on a particular style of combat, choosing instead excellence in all forms of war. Despite their mastery of plasma weapons, swordplay, and high-speed interdiction, it’s their unshakable Grim Resolve that they’re truly famed for – a dour and practical outlook to warfare. If you prefer your anti-tank options a little more discrete, the Sicaran Venator trades mass for speed and can wind its way around enemy flanks before lancing neutron beam laser blasts right through the sides of opposing tanks. Their ability lets them choose at the start of the battle to fight on whatever terms best suit their game plan, but let’s not fool ourselves – whichever vow they swear, the end results will be dished out with a chainsword. This is an incredibly exciting weekend for pre-releases, and I have to say I'm really, truly impressed by The Lion & Retinue kit. Full of tactical power and featuring an amazing sculpt, this really does feel like the arrival of a famed Primarch, with all of the gravitas you'd expect from the Lion. If you're already a Dark Angels player, this release is likely a no-brainer (as long as you can find a place to cut points to make room for him).

Rachel has painted her Lion with armour and cloth that has a matte finish and subtle highlights – providing a different take on the Primarch’s new suit of armour, one that contrasts effectively against the shining gold trim. Sam Lenz The chalk to the Dark Angels’ cheese, the Space Wolves are ferocious front-line fighters who love nothing more than a good scrap, a loud chorus, and a big old tankard of Fenrisian mjød. Their Chapter maintains a proud history of storytelling, with Characters competing to fulfil Deeds Worthy of Saga in the midst of combat – the better to boast about when the battle is inevitably won. The Lion and Retinue is a Warhammer 40,000 boxed set that was released in September 2023. It contains a model of Lion El’Jonson, the Primarch of the Dark Angels, as well as a unit of five Deathwing Veterans. The set is designed to be a good starting point for players who want to start a Dark Angels army, or for players who want to add a powerful new character to their existing army.

The guiding principle was to have the Lion contrast against his brother Roboute Guilliman . “I wanted a relationship between the two,” Seb told us, “It’s hard to talk about the Lion without talking about Guilliman, and they were very much informing each other.” Some people see a miniature like the Lion and spy an opportunity for a show-stopping conversion. Patric has taken the base of the Primarch of the Dark Angels, striding forward with purpose, and converted him into the guise of his diseased – but still mortal – brother, Mortarion. The extremely detailed weathering all over is just the rusty cherry on the top. Pete Harrison This novel takes the Lion on a quest through the shadowed paths between stars to gather loyal knights to his side once more, though many have long since been hunted as members of the Fallen. Unsure of who to trust, and without the aid of his Legion, his father, and his home, the Lion will need to find his place in a galaxy even less forgiving than the one he left.

The twisting corridors of a Boarding Actions map don’t leave many places to hide from the Judgement of an Einhyr Champion, five Einhyr Hearthguard, 10 Hearthkyn Warriors, and five Cthonian Beserks.
