About this deal

Optical Quality – Through the lens a6300, 1/40, f/8, ISO 200 – 35mm f/1.8 a6300, 1/3200, f/2.8, ISO 200 – 30mm f/1.4 a6300, 1/320, f/5.6, ISO 100 – 30mm f/2.8 Sharpness We tested the lens with a few cameras, including a Sony Alpha 6000, the new Alpha 6300 and an Alpha 7R in its APS-C crop mode, and it felt nicely balanced on each. It is fairly large for the focal length. Most of the other lenses I mentioned previously are smaller, almost pancake, but then they don’t have an f/1.4 aperture, which obviously requires larger elements. Here’s what it looks like mounted to the Canon T3i and the Sony Alpha A55 for comparison. Also worth noting is the finish on the Sony version of this lens is a bit different. It has almost a soft textured finish on it that the Canon version of this lens does not have. See below for a closer look at what I mean. Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC Lens on Canon T3i Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC Lens on Sony Alpha A55 Color fringing towards the edges and corners is fairly minimal and auto corrections are available in current and recent Canon and Nikon DSLRs.

You posted links from a Touit tested on a Fuji camera and a Sigma tested on m43. You know that these results are not comparable, yes? The large ribbed focusing ring on the lens barrel is impossible to miss and is easy to find with your eye held to the viewfinder. I had no problem with manually focusing this lens, and I was able to get very accurate focus when using the magnified view offered by the Sony cameras. Even very slight nudges of the electronic focus ring were rewarded with precise shifts in focus. Highly responsive, a slow turn of the ring will shift the focus slightly, whereas a sharp shift could see you jump from a metre to infinity. The optical path includes nine elements in seven groups. Two of the elements are aspherical but the lens features neither FLD (Fluorite-grade Low Dispersion) nor SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements, often used in Sigma lenses to boost sharpness and contrast, while reducing chromatic aberrations. There’s no focus/distance scale, but I didn’t have much issue pulling accurate focus thanks to Sony’s various manual focus assists such as focus peaking and the magnifier. A scaled down version of the FX format Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, this standard prime for APS-C format cameras is less than two-thirds the physical length and barely more than half the weight. Even so, it’s twice as heavy as Nikon’s 35mm DX prime lens, mostly due to the Sigma having a faster aperture rating.

All this has been achievedwhile costing less than the 35 F1.8 OSS, and in fact many APS-C F1.4 primes for other systems. There is a slight cost in terms of distortion, but the high amount of sharpness means images should be more tolerant of correction. Here’s the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC along with the Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisyeye, and the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L lens. Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC Lens A YouTube video reviewing this Sigma 30 says it compares favorably to the Sony 28 fe on the a6300. In fact he indicates the 28 is a hair sharper. See the YouTube video from Lavikka Photography: "Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Lens for Sony APSC E mount NEX 7, a6000 and a6300 Review and Test" a much better lens would be the Sony DT 35/1.8). Sigma claims the use of two "ED" glass elements and one aspherical element in the construction of the lens.

Part of the DN range of lenses for mirrorless cameras, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN C ( Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DN) is a fast- aperture, third-party standard prime for Sony E-mount cameras. Taking into account the 1.5x crop factor on Sony APS-C sensors, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens offers an equivalent 45mm focal length, making it a good option for a variety of subjects, including portraits and general use. One side note: this lens is designed to be used on APS-C cameras, but I did mount the lens on my A7 II as well, and the image circle actually covers quite a bit more than APS-C. In my informal testing, the image circle covers roughly the APS-H area, at around a 1.2x crop factor, if you want to shoot and crop in post later. I wouldn’t recommend using it this way, though, as framing your shots is quite difficult, as it’s hard to discern exactly where the cropped area will be. AutofocusIt balances perfectly on my Sony a6000 and the massive focusing ring provides a really nice rubberized gripping point when out shooting. Given that the Sony lens has a different focal length to the two Sigma lenses, it makes sense that its field of view is slightly narrower. Ok - Fujifilm's lens lineup for APS-C is a much harder competitor, than Sony's few dedicated APS-C lenses - but since the optics are already there and it would "only" mean to exchange the mechanical mount (easy) and the firmware (that'l be the main effort) I would expect it's a viable step.
