About this deal

There were times when it legitimately felt like surround sound speakers in that I could hear things that I kind of thought were noises happening outside of me. An example of this is the Method Man scene in Garden State. We’re always led by this philosophy that you should invest more if a particular equipment piece brings more quality to your work. This is exactly what we’re referring to here. You’ll have to give more for K240, but the advantages that you get can mean a lot in the end. The HD668B don't do well with EQ when adding bass. They lose some definition and sound a bit too boomy. The Samson SR850 is a semi-open pair of studio headphones with a very neutral sound profile. The balance across all frequencies is quite impressive for headphones in this price range. This makes them an appealing option for budget-conscious buyers that want accurate cans for mixing work. Samson SR850 semi-open studio headphones might not be the most beautiful, but they sure sound incredible.

Being that they have a 32 Ohm Impedance and 98dB of Sensitivity, they’re very efficient (meaning they don’t need a lot of power from an amp), and don’t resist power at all. Although we can notice an old-school-style headband, the newer versions of these headphones have more noticeable colors. If you want to stand out and care about aesthatics, AKG K240 headphones are not a bad choice. Design: Bottom Line You can supposedly use these in the studio for monitoring. Samson made some adjustments to fill the need for a studio worker. While I am thoroughly impressed with the sound profile of the Samson SR850, I can’t say the same regarding its comfort levels. It isn’t inherently bad, but it does begin to show its price limitations. Over time you’ll notice them hurting your ears due to the shallow cups and unfortunately it’s just about the same issue I have with the K240.Sure, there are more comfortable options in this price range, but none sound that good. They’re also usually bloated with tons of bass. If you seek neutrality, Samson’s are as close as you can get. When I decided to buy our Samson SR850, I did so because I was on a tight budget. The extensive research lead me to them, and I can’t be more satisfied. They’re equipped with a headband that helps make things more comfortable. But on the other hand, that same headband is a bit flimsy in terms of overall stability. Combined with their overall bulkyness, they won’t be very stable. Stability: Bottom Line

I’ve heard rumors that the 240 does tend to break down over time, but I haven’t experienced it for myself yet. ComfortThe audio cable is also non-detachable and looks as though it may break with repeated use. These are budget headphones not meant to last. Comfortability 3.0

Also, the 850s are drier and more analytical/edgy than the 668B. The mid-bass of the 668B is warmer, and the treble is a bit different. The 668B is more natural with a better Timbre. What is Timbre? I would say the 668B does better with genres in the vein of Jazz and Classical, while the 850 does better with more modern stuff. The 850 is very crisp to my ears and seems to do well with a variety of genres. It’s an extremely balanced and detailed can, with no added emphasis on any particular frequency outside of that treble spike which can be problematic. Now, both of these headphone sets have this nice “blend” we mentioned. However, it’s a no-brainer that AKG K240 headphones look better. Sure, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but K240 really has an objective advantage here. Experience total comfort. Thanks to soft velour earpads, you'll feel like your ears are getting a hug every time you listen. The adjustable headband keeps your cans close, even during the busiest sessions. You'll forget you're wearing headphones at all. This is a headphone more for the budding audiophile who desires an overall balanced sound and tends to drink tea with their pinky out.Since Samson advertises these as studio monitors, they come with 3.5mm to 6.3mm gold-plated adapter. First off, Samson’s SR850 headphones cover the entire audible spectrum and more. Going from 10 to 30000 Hz, they go beyond what you can hear. Although it seems redundant, this enables a better distribution of frequencies in the audible spectrum. Additionally, you can also “feel” some of the bottom-ends, not just hear it. Apparently, Samson SR850 uses some AKG drivers that are usually found in pricier headphones. The result is simply excellent. If you want the SR850 but need more low end thump and noise cancellation, go for the SR950. Who are the Samson SR850s best suited for? The price point is a recurring theme throughout this review, and for a good reason. These are exceptionally cheap headphones that punch well above their price point. From a value perspective, these headphones are an enticing choice. The sound quality is miles ahead of similarly priced cans and an ideal option for a new producer on a budget.
