About this deal

The Volvo suddenly rattled hard. Was something falling apart? The bumper? Part of the undercarriage? The engine itself? I couldn’t see the speedometer, but I was certain that nobody had ever gone this fast in the Volvo for a very long time. The ancient car maxed out at fifty-five on a good day—and we were going much faster than that on the downhill now.

I also appreciate when an author gives away a little teaser or extra so that was an added bonus, I don’t even have social media (other than GR) and I was still able to get the link which was super cool.

The car moaned as if in pain when we finally ground to a complete stop where the foothills leveled off on the valley floor. I coughed violently in the sudden stillness. It felt like my lungs were filled with more dust than air. You definitely have a concussion,” I said as matter-of-factly as I could, not wanting her to worry. I could worry enough for both of us. I moved one finger to hover over the Emergency Call button, glancing between the glowing red text and the headlights. Still no service. She smiled and tapped on the brakes as a deer’s eyes glowed white near the side of the road before it bounded into the night. “Stop it right now. I keep telling you, it’s gorgeous. And it makes your eyes look huge.” She reached up to grab a hunk of her blond hair. “Mine feels like straw lately—how do you get yours so shiny?”

This had a promising start. I love how the book jumps right into it from the get-go and the isolated setting made everything feel all the more eerie. However, the story soon loses its momentum (and the reader), just like the characters' beat-up Volvo. I found myself bored less than halfway through. A bunch of drunk college students, came the easy answer. Nobody would bat an eye if Laura and I didn’t show up tonight. The only things they’d ever found of Ava's were her purse and phone, tossed into the sagebrush at the edge of the reservoir. They’d trolled it too, with zero success. All anyone really knew was that Ava had been at that party one minute—and the next she hadn’t. I decided this wasn’t a Dateline episode about two silly, scantily clad college girls going missing on their way to a party at Coffin Creek after all. This was an episode of Secrets to Survival. I swallowed. “Let’s do it,” I said finally. The water wasn’t deep—maybe three or four feet in the middle, judging from the boulders dotted throughout the center. At its widest point, it was maybe fifteen yards across.

During the day: If you have a flexible schedule, you may find it helpful to take breaks during the day to read a book. Even though there were things about the novel that I liked such as how it highlights sexual violence against women + a strong protagonist + her true crime knowledge, none of that ever really amounted to anything. I wrapped my arms around myself in the chilly air, suddenly hyperaware of the goosebumps on my raw skin. It was much colder down here than it had been on the road, and it couldn’t be much later than 9:00 p.m. The temperature was only going to drop as the night deepened.

Additionally, novels can offer insights into different cultures, historical periods, and social issues, providing an opportunity to expand your knowledge and empathy. Taking place a few years before the events of Run On Red, we get to see first-hand just exactly what happened to Ava Robles and how she came to play her part in the follow-up.

The useless shoulder belt flopped around my chest. My lungs were on fire, and my vision swirled with indecipherable shapes of light and dark as the headlights bounced and cut out.I shook my head. “No. I have to be dragged everywhere. And I always think something is wrong. You know that.” At last, we reached the treeline at the bank of the river. Laura nodded toward the other side. “I think we … should cross.” I let out a choked laugh, pushing aside the memory of the howls I’d heard a few minutes earlier, and grabbed the keys Laura passed to me. Disclaimer: maybe everyone else will find this to be vanilla and not edge of your seat so don’t take my sole word as gospel HOWEVER I personally was captivated by the chase, the tension and the terror. If you are a fan of Sara Ennis and her Dollhouse series this one might be for you - the writing style is very similar and it just felt so easy to read.
