About this deal

RHS Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers which is now available in ebook(PDF) format, is an expert guide to planning your dream garden, redesigned to aid navigation and make identifying plants easier than ever. Over 8,000 easy-to-find plants and thousands of photographs will give you all the guidance you need. Finally there is a Plant Dictionary which contains entries for every genus in the Encyclopedia and includes an additional 4,000 recommended plants to those featured in the Plant Catalogue. It also function as an index to the Plant Catalogue. The articles are well-written and very interesting, the layout is good and the book is very easy to use (other than the fact that you need to be a power lifter to actually carry the thing). The photography throughout is beautiful. If I were a gardener, this would be my constant companion.

Review: This book is absolutely sumptuous, now in its sixth edition, and nearly 20 years since the first edition was published, the sheer scale and size of this book is a testament to the enduring value of this beautiful collection. Originally compiled by Chris Philip and his partner Denys Gueroult, who were looking for interesting plants to grow in their garden and recording what nursery was selling what selection, the original Plant Finder listed 22,000 plants. Since then, the book has grown in terms of the plant groups it covers, its comprehensiveness and the number of genera, species and cultivars that are included. For garden designers, RHS Plant Finder offers an indispensable list of ingredients, while horticultural writers use it for reference.” Plant Names and their Origins explains the system for classifying and naming plants, while Creating a Garden offers advice on design, planting and basic pruning. If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

This being said, I couldn't resist reading this book after I bought for my green-thumbed wife as it is just so beautiful a tome. It's a big, chunky doorstep of a book, as you'd expect from an encyclopedia, and it's very well designed (I'm a qualified graphic designer, so I do know what I'm talking about on this front). Plants presented gouped by colour, along with basic info on requirements (sun/shade, hardiness, water requirements) and a thumbnail photo, lots of cultivars included in photos. Drawing on expert advice from the RHS, the book features an illustrated catalogue of more than 4,000 plants and flowers. Organised by colour, size, and type, rather than as an A-Z directory, and accompanied by beautiful, full-colour images, it will help you select the right varieties for your outdoor space. Browse the photographic catalogue to find at-a-glance plant choice inspiration, or use the extensive plant dictionary to look up more than 8,000 plant varieties and the best growing conditions for them. The contents include a helpful guide to how to use the book, which is essential to understanding how the book is organised.
