About this deal

I remember reading some time ago that the Aria was more focussed on the MC side than MM and improvement over the Fono MM wasn’t great. For that money there were better MM only stages.

Best phono preamps 2022: budget to high-end phono stages

When buying a phono stage, a compact and lightweight choice is ideal. There’s little to no space next to the turntable; hence, a tiny preamp would fit easily. Hi Dan – there is no difference, that was my point. We’re talking semantics. I think the term ‘phono preamplifier’ is confusing and you’re making my point for me on that score 🙂Difficult as it was to see just how Rega could eke out more from the Fono MM, with the MK3, it has essentially succeeded.

Rega | Aria MK3 MM/MC Phono Stage

RIAA equalisation in the Fono MM Disk Stage has been split into two stages, the signal path uses polyester capacitors and the RIAA circuits use polypropylene capacitors, thus minimising any interaction. The Rega Fono has 100 pF/47 kOhm and with cable it should be around 200 pF, which should be ok for the Ortofon. The resistance could be lowered a bit to tame the peaking 10-20 kHz but basically it should sound ok with that loading. Then didn't have the heart to sell the RP6, its more than an audio device, its the story of my life Remember always to maintain a strong signal level above the noise level, to get high-quality and clear audio. Generally, avoid buying a phono preamp with a low SNR. Total Harmonic Distortion Have one connected to my Rega Brio which has a more than adequate built in phono. However, the Mk3 gives a clear improvement in sound quality. It forms a turntable setup that I am exceptionally happy with. Even my hard-core audiophile friends seem be impressed by it. It sounds very good even though none of the components cost real audiophile amounts of money. The essence of phono preamps Now available in an upgraded MKII version with a better looking cabinet. The design of the cabinet was probably the only thing that could be held against the original version.

In my opinion, it is not required or recommended to look outside the Rega product range to find perfect phono preamps for the Rega turntables.I'd just like to point out for posterity that the case is actually made of aluminum, and the front looks foggy /cheap because the protective plastic covering is still on the polished and shiny nameplate. Very little awareness of the subject, I would have to be grateful if I could find here an old model from most of the manufacturers I mentioned above.

phono stages made in England by Rega Award-winning phono stages made in England by Rega

Take the Rega Fono MM as an example of such a conundrum. Since the MK2 version received a What Hi-Fi? Award it has had plenty of competition, but none sufficient to relieve it of its crown.Given our only minor qualm with its predecessor was that some competitors offered a little more in the way of absolute detail – though none performing so charmingly across the board – in theory, the Fono MM has now boarded up the only remaining possible weakness in the defence of its title. This is what I like, reaching a level of contentment, safe in the knowledge that there exists no perfection to be reached at any price. Having a phono preamp isn’t a must. Still, it proves beneficial to many sound technicians due to its dedication to improving your player’s signal. When it comes to the design of the Rega Fono MM Disk Stage, the aesthetics were just as important to Rega as the electrical capabilities. An aluminium case has been used, matching that of the Rega TTPSU and Fono MC amplifier, offering a design that feels familiar whilst boasting brand new technologies that will bring this unit level with the rest of the products within the range. Leaving your phono preamp on isn’t a problem. Besides, most high-end phono stages don’t come with a power switch because manufacturers always saw the need for constant powering. 3) Should You Plug In Your Preamp?
