With DAB selected as a source, we were able to tune in a plethora of digital radio stations in under a minute, each one with scrolling text and other station information nicely presented in a compact and colourful way. In terms of pure content, though, it’s hard to fault. The BBC’s Listen Again content and thousands of podcasts are all available here. Listening to it all would take several lifetimes. The one slightly fiddly element is Listen Later, new to this second-generation Classic model. This allows you to record a programme to listen to at a later date, but the execution of this feature is deliberately limiting – and pretty old-school in its approach. Only one recording can be stored and the timing of it has to be set manually. There’s no EPG-like functionality here, although you can set a regular time to record each day or week. When adjusting the volume of the radio or changing radio stations sometimes a sound can be heard through the headphones. This seems to occur in time with the change of information on the display. It’s disappointing to find this on the radio and whether it bothers you could depend on your own listening experience. User interface Switch-on the Pure Elan Connect and you’ll be taken straight to network settings, not only for fetching internet radio stations and podcasts, but also to keep time. There follows a slightly confusing set of choices for things such as daylight savings – for which the default is ‘no’… why would anyone want a radio that gives the wrong time for half the year?!. Nevertheless, at least connecting to the home Wi-Fi network is easy if you’re using a WPS-enabled Wi-Fi router. The 2.4″ TFT colour display has a resolution of 320×240 and in digital radio mode shows the name of the station and programme information, the time and signal strength. Tuning into Classic FM in the FM modeThe manual for the Pure One doesn’t list a way to display the serial number. We’ve tried on our One Mi Series 2 and can only see the software version and the device identifier. If you still have the box for the radio the serial number may be displayed on the outside. Battery power supply uses six C (R14) batteries or ChargePAK™ (not supplied). At normal listening levels alkaline batteries provide approximately 35 hours, and ChargePAK provides approximately 20 hours of portable DAB listening. The radio will scan for digital radio stations the first time that it’s turned on and subsequently return to the last listened to station.

Sadly, it doesn't feature a handle, but at 109 x 85 x 187mm, it’s easy enough to move around the home. To call it travel-friendly would be going too far, though; the Pure Elan Connect is best left in a kitchen or bathroom and only occasionally taken outside. All the benefits of DAB more station choice, station selection by name, scrolling text display, easy autotune, and crisp, clear sound. Around 20 hours of portable DAB listening from the optional, rechargeable ChargePAK-C6L™; around 35 hours from six C size batteries; or connect to the mains for home listening. Pure have used their expertise as world leaders in DAB to produce a radio that not only sounds great but is intuitive and easy to use too. So the Pure One Classic Series II is a pretty good all-rounder but there are obstacles ahead of it, and the most dangerous are – at the moment – its predecessors. The amendments made in this “Series II” adjustment are not essential, while the falling price of the old guard makes buying one while they’re still around seem very attractive. You can nab the first-gen Elite model for five pounds less than the Series II at present, and we’d rather have the sound quality improvements of its dual-speaker system than the rather limited recording skills of the Listen Later feature.

The Pure Elan Connect’s design is unlikely to catch the eye. While other manufacturers of DAB radios deliver retro designs or opt for post-modern use of wood panels, the Pure Elan Connect’s shell is plastic. On the positive side, this means it’s extremely lightweight at 438g – although the four AA batteries you’ll need to make it portable will increase its bulk. Please note, if you have a very early model of the device listed above, a DAB+ update will not be possible due to the age. Diversity can be so easy: Do you want to tune in and listen to classic USW or DAB/DAB+ radio? Or do you prefer to dial up your Spotify Connect via Bluetooth - be it from your smartphone, tablet or notebook? It’s still a perfectly serviceable, clear interface – just getting on a bit. The main menu is a simple list of key features: Digital Radio (i.e. DAB, it still has top billing), The Lounge, Media Player, FM Radio and Auxiliary Input. Stereo reproduction appeared to be accurate on FM, DAB and with Bluetooth, even though the radio has a single speaker. Not all DAB radio stations are broadcast in stereo and this would explain why some stations are still in mono when using headphones. Pure premium internet radio spreads outstanding sound and good mood wherever you need the one or the other. You might want to fall asleep to your favourite tunes, start your day with a pot of coffee and a podcast or put on some kitchen swagger. You might also want to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world. With Pure radio, you can do it all.A potential downside of the display is that the text is much smaller than on some other Pure radios and the similarly priced Roberts Play 10. Although the display is bright and the text is clear some users may still prefer larger text with less information.
