About this deal

Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 embodies everything an Islay whisky can and should be. The Islay grown barley adds complexity and depth to this single malt, showcasing the delicate balance of fruit and smoke which Port Charlotte is renowned for. I wish I’d noted early days’ when I opened my bottles…. Only began doing it late 2020. I remember having this mid 2019 and being impressed. What springs to mind is there was a brief sharpness… yes… salt…smoke of course… minimal iodine. … I couldn’t express my thoughts at the time… Graham and herbal notes…. and citrus…. Very intense whisky, very strong. Nice combination of peat and sweet and fruity notes. In the nose the scent of eucalyptus/menthol is remarkable. Port Charlotte whisky gets its name from the village of Port Charlotte, a white-walled and windswept sort of place just a couple of kilometers down the road from Bruichladdich. This release, Port Charlotte 10, is distilled from 100% Scottish barley peated to 40 ppm. Ppm stands for parts per million phenol, a common method for for gauging the smokiness of malted barley that isn’t always useful for consumers. The distillate ages at least 10 years on Islay in a mix of first- and second-fill American whiskey casks, and second-fill French wine casks. It’s bottled at 50% ABV and, like all of Bruichladdich’s whiskies, without coloring or chill filtration.

Port Charlotte – Bruichladdich Distillery

Hahaha Happy New Year Allan. I’m happy to say I survived :D I’m also glad to see you did too and congrats to your daughter and your family, that’s fantastic!

From 1855 the distillery was operated by John B Sheriff of Glasgow [7] and from 1895 J.B. Sherrif & Co Ltd until 1921. In 1921 it was acquired by Benmore Distilleries Limited which was taken over in 1929 by the Distillery Company Ltd. This resulted in the closure of the distillery. Port Charlotte is Bruichladdich’s heavily-peated single malt, with a peating level of around 40ppm. Bruichladdich describes Port Charlotte as having ‘the power of peat with the elegance, complexity and floral top notes for which our Bruichladdich stills are famous’.

The village has maintained a lot of its character although the area around the pier nowadays are mostly holiday lets. The views from several parts of the village over Loch Indaal are stunning. Take for instance the view down from School Street, or the view ahead when you enter the village.

How nice that, even nowadays, at Port Charlotte you don't have to stretch that far to get a really good dram in your glass. The PC 10 almost has to be careful that the Islay Barley doesn’t overtake it sooner or later.
