About this deal

The Friends of Horsenden Hill are excited to be involved in this first truly urban London beaver reintroduction and look forward to the day they arrive.” On the southern side of the canal lies Paradise Fields comprising scrapes, reed beds and lagoons offering a peaceful haven for wildlife and visitors alike. The demand for beaver meat, fur and the secretion from a small gland used for perfume and pain relief meant they were hunted to the point of their disappearance in the 16th century.

Elliot Newton, co-founder of Citizen Zoo welcomed the beaver licence approval and funding announcement, commenting:A first attempt to reintroduce a pair of beavers in London last year failed after the male – named Justin Beaver – died, leaving his mate Signourney Beaver to fend for herself. Nel is the owner of a houseful of animals and the organiser of the farmers' market in the picturesque Paradise Fields. There is a handsome young love interest (around a year younger than the woman as far as I can tell, which of course makes him unobtainable) who likes her, she likes him and yet she is constantly vile to him. This is because she believes that the occasion that she bumped into him whilst stalking her daughter in a night club in London (‘cos London is really small and you’re likely to bump into people you know like that, especially when neither of you actually LIVE in London) was in fact a cunning ruse to seduce her to stop her from protesting about the hospice plans as he is a solicitor for one of the interested parties. What??? Many people assume beavers to be a wilderness species, but in fact we’ve just forgotten how closely we used to live alongside them. And we’ve forgotten the rich tapestry of life they can bring as engineers of healthy ecosystems. Healthy ecosystems clean our water and air, reduce flooding and drought, capture Rewilding allows nature to take the lead and is an exciting way to create healthier ecosystems and allow humans and wildlife to live together more harmoniously.’

The works on Paradise Fields are currently centred on a new fence around the habitat, which the beavers are trusted to make homely by themselves. But who can she trust to help her save Paradise Fields? Her sensible boyfriend Simon? Her friends, Sacha and Vivien? Or Jake, the devilishly handsome man who kissed her under the mistletoe... Ealing Wildlife Group says the beavers will turn their homes into a ‘more ecologically inclusive habitat’ allowing other troubled species such as water voles to thrive.

My first Katie Fforde book and my overall feeling towards it is that it is SO dull. The main character is about 42 as far as I can tell but seems to have the characteristics of an 80 year old e.g. she is too old to send a text message and at one point is resigning herself to a life of solitude with her grandchildren who haven't even been born yet(???). If I behave like that in the next 5 years or so someone please tell me to get my act together and stop behaving like a pensioner. One of the first projects to reintroduce beavers to the UK was in 2002 in Ham Fen, a wetland nature reserve in Kent.

Bringing Beavers back…to Ealing? – Ealing Wildlife Group

It would also be used by experts to study the animals, and learn how to manage beavers in such an environment, with focus on monitoring effects on water and flood levels. Free-living wild beavers are already as close to London as Medway, Kent and Oxfordshire. Natural recolonisation is almost an inevitability. Learning to live alongside beavers is something that landowners, local councils, residents, conservation organisations and other stakeholders are going to have to do in future. And excitingly today, the 17th of March 2022, Forty Hall Farm in Enfield released a pair of beavers into a woodland enclosure under license in a joint project by Capel Manor College and Enfield Council, the first beavers to live in London in 400 years. The key objectives of our proposed project are:The fields are just minutes from Greenford Underground in zone four of the city and will be opened to the public once its new inhabitants have settled in. Plans to ‘rewild’ the capital will allow Londoners to see wild beavers on public land for the first time since the 1500s. The project, led by Ealing Wildlife Group, Ealing Council and other conservation groups, will mark the first time beavers have been introduced to such an urban area. Is she ready to take a chance on love? A wonderfully romantic novel from the Sunday Times No 1 bestselling author of A Springtime Affair and A Wedding in the Country. Beavers are a keystone species, referred to as “ecosystems engineers” and the perfect architects of healthy and biodiverse ecosystems. With their dam and canal creation, they create wetlands and deadwood which create the ideal habitats for insects, amphibians, and even water voles. They also slow the flow of waterways, preventing flooding and filtering water, improving water quality!
