About this deal

Choose an animal and write a detailed description of it to help the butterfly find it straight away. Julia Donaldson is one of today's most popular writers. Her bestselling titles include The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom. Although she is best-known for her picture books, Julia also writes longer novels, plays and songs. She lives in Glasgow and spends a lot of time on stage performing her brilliant sell-out singalong shows! This pattern continues with humour and rhyme as the animal pair meet numerous other animals until the monkey is finally reunited with its mum and dad. As the monkey and the butterfly continue their exploration, they eventually stumble upon the monkey's father. He affectionately calls the monkey, urging her to return home. Just as they are about to head home, the butterfly catches sight of the monkey's true mother. Reuniting with her mother fills the young monkey's heart with joy, ending her journey of discovery and separation.

Look at the patterns and textures on the animals in the story. Investigate what camouflage means and how this helps animals. This is an endearing story about a monkey who loses his Mum and is helped by a butterfly to try and find her. Throughout the book, other animals are introduced using describing what they look like. This allows the children to interact with the story and guess what the next animal may be. When little monkey can't find his mother, butterfly offers to help in the search. Little monkey says that his mother is big, so butterfly leads him to... an elephant. No, that's not right! Little monkey says his mom is furry, so butterfly leads him to... a bat.Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn't think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition. He moved to England in 1982 to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art, and then set up home in London. Once more this misleads butterfly as she produces a snake, so Little Monkey has to tell him that his mum has more legs than that. Once more this is confusing to butterfly who produces a spider. 'No, no, no! ... 'she'd rather eat fruit than swallow a fly, And she lives in the treetops way up high' is Little Monkey's next clue. This article does not cite any sources. The clever aspect of this tale is the butterfly being unsure who they're looking for as their babies differ from them.

Monkey Puzzle (also known as “Where’s my Mum?”) by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is a firm favourite with children in our classes. Monkey has lost his Mum. The butterfly is keen to help but it takes a while! They meet lots of other animals along the way. Investigate environmental issues linked to jungles and rainforests. How can people help to protect them? I really enjoyed reading this book and reading it to a class of children because they seem to enjoy it and engage with the story. I would say that the most appropriate age for this book would be around 3-6 years. However, I have read it to 1 and 2 year old children and they have engaged with the it. I think it just depends on the child and if they are happy to sit and listen to a story. The butterfly’s babies don’t look like him. Can you explain why this is? What does metamorphosis mean? I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married.
