I don't much go for the self-help genre, and indeed the last half of this book is plagued with a lot of vacuous lists, platitudes, and musings. However, Mr. Leonard's genuine commitment to Aikido and the years-long exposure to Zen philosophy and practice that afforded him make the first half of the book quite life-changing for the average Westerner. Morph Mastery is an evidence and research based intervention to support reading, spelling and vocabulary. It combines a morphological approach to words with what we know works for learners with specific learning difficulties; it is multi-sensory, structured, cumulative, with multiple built in opportunities for over-learning. Morph Mastery is most effective when delivered 1:1 but it can also be delivered in a small group. As an intervention it is designed for learners aged 9 -13 for whom phonics has failed or is no longer appropriate, but it can be used across the age ranges in different capacities, and adapted for older learners in intervention. Morphology (prefixes, suffixes and roots) is embedded in the English spelling curriculum alongside and beyond phonics from Year 1. This practical workshop will enable teachers to explore how the Morph Mastery materials can be used to support spelling in an engaging, multi-sensory and metacognitive way.
