It’s surprising that a peated whisky this old still has a fiery peat and smoke flavor. The peat of other 18-year-old peated whiskeys I’ve had have mellowed down to nuttier notes.

They have captured the perfect island malt, with lots of seaside tones and a light body. There is a waft of smoke throughout with a healthy dose of fruit thrown in for good measure. Finished in sherry casks, this is a rich and fruity expression with hints of smoke and plenty of character.

This year’s shortlist included a mix of whiskies from the Highlands to the island, showcasing some bold flavours including Jura 18 Year Old, which won the runner up prize, Old Pulteney 15 Year Old and Oban 14 Year old. After an expert panel carried out a blind tasting, Ledaig 18 Year Old was the winner. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. The palate is rich and full of fruit. There are dates, raisins and oranges, all with a nice chewy texture to them. From the color of Ledaig 18 alone, it appears the finish is much deeper and longer than most sherry-finished Islay whiskies, as well, and here we really see the best of both worlds — smoky peat meeting sweet sherry. Whisky under the Ledaig brand is peated single malt by Tobermory distillery from the Isle of Mull in Scotland. The distillery founded in 1798, having undergone a number of periods of closure, was formerly known as Ledaig. While there is a hint of berries and tobacco, the sherry is not very prominent. Then a firm sooty note comes forward, as well as a light farmy note. On the nose: Firm yet gentle peat & smoke; hints of chocolate and coffee. Hints of lingering sulfur. Strawberry chocolate, dates, some sort of mint chocolate due to the pepperiness, and chocolate notes. Slight appearances of sultanas. Mouth: charred hints and wood spice with a certain sharp edge. Grassy notes, salt and lemons, as well as herbs and a floral top note. I expected more dark chocolate from the sherry, but it stays in the higher pitched flavours. Later some smoked bacon, liquorice and vanilla come out, as well as some asphalt. Singapore has a lot of great whisky bars like The Wall, The Auld Alliance, The Single Cask, Swan Song and Quaich Bars. The whisky community there are a nice and enthusiastic bunch. A lot of them don’t take themselves too seriously, despite their being knowledgeable and opinionated. There are a good mix of people who can throw up money for bottles like Karuizawas and Macallans. There are also those “hipster” drinkers who go for the less famous brands. They are my kind of people. I really like the Tobermory 10 year old single malt so I was looking forward tasting their more mature version. Especially because peated sherry cask whiskies usually hit the spot for me.Palate: Grassy peat with sea breeze in tow, almond butter, lemon zest, biscuit dough, honeydew melon. Another item that jumps in as "buy me". Something wonderful, tasty and fully polished. The whisky is delicate and pleasantly lingers with its flavors in the throat. mi Lagavulin therefore immediately becomes a must for me! Although not as strong as many peated malts out there, Ledaig is full of flavour and is a top quality malt.
