About this deal

After some years devoted to producing children´s works, the author in parallel dedicates part of her time to the creation of her most ambitious work: Rosalie Blum. In 2007, the first volume of the trilogy is published in France. And it is finished by the launching of the third volume of the series two years later. Jourdy renders these encounters in glorious shades of ripe pink flesh and the deepest green of high summer.

A vibrant tableau of small-town life as seen through the eyes of a woman returning home from Paris. Es una auténtica maravilla esta novela gráfica, la calidad de los dibujos es impresionante, las tonalidades muy agradables y perfectamente ajustadas al texto.depicts a milieu where full-blown depression is seldom more than a frame or two away. Most people look like they’re struggling with their weight; men are disinclined to shave but not quite ambitious enough to grow beards; smoking is seemingly required by law. The place to be, for many, is the local bar. Called Le Tropical, its ambience is as unlike a beach in Tahiti as could be imagined. But it is the neighbourhood nerve centre, practically the only informal gathering place in a setting that otherwise discourages such things. This season features world premieres from leading Vancouver theatre companies, an East Van Panto twist on Beauty and the Beast, hilarious comedy, and three big international contemporary-circus shows. The book is entitled Juliette, floating in the centre of the cover in a grassy clearing is a second, possibly alternative name: or, the Ghosts Return in the Spring. Instead of focusing on what kind of articles will attract the most advertising dollars, we can spend time devoted to researching and writing stories that our readers find most valuable and make the most positive impact in our region. Since Camille Jourdy finished her education in Fine Arts, this French author divides her time between her works as illustrator of children´s books and her true passion: comic creation. Wordless and experimental, Joe Kessler’s “ The Gull Yettin” traces the disquieting connection between a young boy and the shape-shifting, birdlike creature that is obsessed with him. We follow the boy from the death of his family, through a perilous voyage across the water and into, for a time, the care of a woman who takes him in as if he were her own.

Juliette • Montreal Review of Books

Grand-mère n'était pas prête. (…) Camille Jourdy’s marvellous new comic book begins with a train journey: a young woman, Juliette, is leaving Paris, and heading for the small town where she grew up. Exhausted by the city and the seething anxiety from which she has suffered ever since she was a girl, she longs for the awkward embrace of her somewhat complicated family: her divorcee father, now lonely enough to be on the dating apps; her mother, an amateur artist with bohemian leanings who has recently taken yet another younger lover; her older sister, Marylou, who though in possession of both a husband and two small children, is also having a one-day-a-week affair with a man who works in a fancy dress shop (he comes to her for joyful afternoon sex in her greenhouse, disguised as a bear, or a wolf, or a ghost). A regular of the local dive bar, Polux mostly whiles away the hours drifting into the lassitude of drink, spending his days with the occasional hook up and silly bets, seemingly dissolving into a state of permanent ennui.

Talking is reserved for when we’re really drunk or high, or about to be murdered or something,” says Sammie of male friendships early in Mattie Lubchansky’s “ Boys Weekend.” It’s a statement that will be cast into relief over the course of the story, which finds the transfeminine Sammie (who, like Lubchansky, uses they/them pronouns) reluctantly joining a bachelor party gone spectacularly bad. By the end of their time on the artificial island El Campo, a sort of near-future Las Vegas where anything goes, Sammie and their former friends have gotten drunk and high, and been about to be murdered together, but talk still comes with only the greatest difficulty — when it comes at all. Her very first contribution to the graphic narrative world takes place in 2004, when her first comic is published; Une araignée, des tagliatelles et au lit, tu parles d´une vie. This work shows a firm experimental vocation, where Jourdy plays with the narrative possibilities of the media. Our team of independent journalists takes pride in doing in-depth reporting and taking time to get it right. We're able to focus our attention on publishing impactful journalism in the public interest, and publish it for free for all to read, because we have the support of Tyee Builders.
