About this deal

Deere bought its way to market dominance. Though John Deere’s story begins with a genuine breakthrough — the self-scouring steel plough — its modern dominance owes as much to aggressive merger and acquisition strategies as to ingenuity. Deere has been buying up competitors in lieu of inventing its own superior products since the early 20th century, when it decided to buy leading tractor manufacturer Waterloo Gasoline Engine Co. after a few attempts at developing its own competing product. Deere has spent billions on well over a dozen acquisitions and mergers in the past two decades , including the roll-ups of the world’s largest timber-harvesting machinery producer and the world’s largest road-construction machinery producer , and numerous smaller acquisitions of both equipment makers and automation software companies.

Deere & Co. did not respond to a request for comment. UPDATE: Three days after publication, Deere provided a comment, saying that the company does not comment on pending litigation, but that it “fully supports our customers’ needs to maintain and repair their Deere equipment... providing easy access to detailed product information, spare parts and software needed for owners to repair their machines, including diagnostic tools and remote access to technicians for long-distance help.” But many farmers and advocates dispute these claims. But those deficiencies, like a failure to define the need for fair and reasonable pricing on spare parts (or the need for purchasable spare parts at all), are less important here. The problem isn't that John Deere has balked at implementing part of the agreement. It's that John Deere apparently hasn't lifted a finger to implement it. Both Vice (Opens in a new window) and the US Public Interest Research Group ( US PIRG (Opens in a new window)) recently followed-up on how the rollout of this new information has gone. Deere’s bid to become the Tesla of farm equipment only enhances the technology inside its machines. None other than current FTC chair Lina Khan wrote in 2013 about data collection through farm equipment. Deere tractors and combines “automatically transmit data collected from particular farms to company databases,” Khan wrote. The machines stream data to the John Deere Operations Center, where it is continuously analyzed and optimized. It’s unclear how farmers could turn off this data stream, even if they wanted to.

Brand Loyalty Part 4: John Deere: Still the Brand to Beat Brand Loyalty Part 4: John Deere: Still the Brand to Beat

John Deere is the world’s largest producer of farm equipment, with more market share than its two largest competitors. The lawsuit alleges that, though Deere has made some types of software and repair parts available to the public, they are “insufficient to restore competition to the Deere repair services market,” and notes that “there are no legitimate reasons to restrict access to necessary repair tools.”Between lawmakers, advocates, and a growing number of farmer lawsuits, Deere appears to be on the run. Yet the company remains reluctant to give up an inch of its control of farm technology and data—a control that misshapes the power relationship between the company and the farmer. Standoff Between Farmers And Tractor Makers Intensifies Over Repair Issues". NPR . Retrieved 2021-07-07. During World War II, the great-grandson of John Deere, Charles Deere Wiman, was president of the company, but he accepted a commission as a colonel in the U.S. Army. Burton F. Peek was hired as president during this period. Before Wiman returned to work at the company in late 1944, he directed the farm machinery and equipment division of the War Production Board. [20] In addition to farm machinery, John Deere manufactured military tractors, and transmissions for the M3 tank. They also made aircraft parts, ammunition, and mobile laundry units to support the war effort. [21] The suit alleges that, much like Apple with smartphones, Deere is purposefully withholding the software tools needed to repair its products from farmers and independent repair shops. "The EDL is the required interface which allows the Service Advisor laptop to actually communicate with the tractor controllers," the source told me. The lawsuit claims John Deere is violating antitrust rules and also alleges that Deere is illegally “tying” farmers to Deere-authorized service centers through arbitrary means. Deere’s latest tactic has been to say that it is required to make some software changes proprietary to “protect the emissions controls.” Deere executive Grant Suhre told the Nebraska legislature that the company would be “liable to the EPA under the Clean Air Act to ensure that the emissions controls remain functional and perform,” and that the company could be shut down if emissions controls were altered on just one of its tractors. In 1912, Deere & Company president William Butterworth (Charles' son-in-law), who had replaced Charles Deere after his death in 1907, began the company's expansion into the tractor business. [15] Deere & Company briefly experimented with its own tractor models, the most successful of which was the Dain All-Wheel-Drive, but in the end decided to continue its foray into the tractor business by purchasing the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company in 1918, which manufactured the popular Waterloo Boy tractor at its facilities in Waterloo, Iowa. Deere & Company continued to sell tractors under the Waterloo Boy name until 1923, when the John Deere Model D was introduced. [16] The company continues to manufacture a large percentage of its tractors in Waterloo, Iowa, namely the 7R, 8R, and 9R series.
