Ghost tours at Ordsall Hall, just down the road from Manchester in Salford, can be a terrifying experience, known for the many sightings of the ‘ White Lady‘– most say she is the spirit of Lady Margaret Radclyffe who died, broken hearted, in 1599 after the death of her beloved brother Alexander. Sir John Radclyffe is said to inhabit the star chamber – the former Lord of the Manor is said to very keen on the ladies… Spooky season is creeping up on us... So here are some of the best things to do this Halloween in Manchester. Investigators were brought in after an ancient Egyptian statue spooked museum bosses (Image: Manchester Museum)

One of the only buildings in the North West to be mentioned in the Domesday Book, Wardley Hall is now the official residence of the Roman Catholic Bishops of Salford. The analysis, conducted by BonusFinder, looked at a range of factors for the research, including the number of cemeteries, reported ghost sightings, haunted locations and the number of paranormal investigators. It also looked at the number of abandoned properties and houses over 100 years old, all in relation per 10,000 people. The ghostly 'hell hound' has been part of folklore across the UK for centuries. Appearing either headless or with malevolent flaming eyes, the huge sinister beast is said to be an omen of death and just a single glimpse could bring about a fatal curse. Those who heard his howl were warned to shut their eyes. The events at house number 16 at Wardle Brook Avenue still hang over residents of the area despite the fact they occurred half a century ago and were perpetrated solely by an infamous couple, who we will discuss in a moment. This decision will see a significant reduction in levels of service between Manchester and London in the crucial period running up to Christmas, impacting on visitor numbers to the city and making it harder for people to get home to see their family. Webb’s spirit was once seen crying by a mother and daughter visiting the hall. The pair took pity upon the woman (who they believed to be alive) when they saw her travelling down a corridor, weeping to herself. You might have spotted the oddly shaped exterior of one of the oldest Manchester pubs before, but the inside is just as mysterious. The current landlord and lady have both reported glasses moving about the premises (which they also say has happened in front of customers, too), as well as things being miraculously moved, and the feeling of a general chilling presence around them. Next time you pop in for a pint, be sure to look behind you.

Avanti West Coast has announced it will be cutting services between Manchester and London throughout December. Experts decided to monitor the room on time-lapse video and were astonished to see it clearly show the statuette spinning 180 degrees – with nobody going near it. Egyptologist Mr Price, said: “I noticed one day that it had turned around. I thought it was strange because it is in a case and I am the only one who has a key. The basement in the pub was used as a morgue during the Second World War, and in 1945, Canadian airman Geoff Monroe, who was staying in room four, fell from the window to his untimely death. It is unclear whether the solider fell or jumped, but there have been numerous reports of Monroe, dressed in full uniform, waking guests. The clip was first uploaded in 2012, but is still being circulated by people on social media and by media outlets trying to discover the reason for the ghostly goings-on. The most common account is of a ghostly male figure, dressed as an airman, wandering around the gates before disappearing. One letter, written in 1971 by a former airport worker, reveals how he had encountered an ‘old man’ whom he believed was the ghost of a night watchman who was killed there years earlier. In 1828, a young boy was playing in Ancoats when he was approached by an old lady. She asked him to deliver a cake to a man named Mr Drummond. Another ghost thought to reside in the hotel is that of a grey lady who wanders around the halls as if searching for something. This is thought to be the spirit of a woman frantically hunting for her missing baby - a spirit that occupied the building after some of the panelling used to build it was recycled from the nearby Haslington Hall. Maxwell was a devotee of theatre and drama during his earthly existence and was praised for his performances in The Doctor’s Dilemma, Blithe Spirit, and the BBC television series Shadow of the Tower. Stop along the route include Saddleworth Museum & Art Gallery and Brownhill Countryside Centre, and the walk is said to require moderate fitness levels – and of course, nerves of steel. With a green-tiled exterior the Peveril of the Peak Pub in the city centre does have a bit of an eerie feel to it from the outside, so it makes sense that it should have its own resident ghost. The spirit that’s said to reside at this pub isn’t mischievous at all, in fact it’s rather helpful.

In between, the downstairs was occupied by Brannigan’s Nightclub. To be completely honest, I don’t know what is more terrifying- poltergeist activity or the idea of spending a considerable amount of time in the vomit coloured interior of Brannigan’s circa 2003. According to some, Kanky, who by all accounts was a hoot at parties, would watch as grieving relatives buried their dead and then by cover of darkness would dig up the body. Another more recent story tells of a visit by a local medic, Dr. Pilcher, who had heard the tales of the ghostly happenings in the hall, but remained cynical. To prove he was correct in dismissing the tales, he stayed overnight in the hall, in the room where the White Lady was murdered, with no incidents of note to report. Wardley Hall, the early medieval manor house in the Wardley area of Worsley, is one of the few buildings in the north west to have had a mention in the Domesday Book. Before it was occupied by the Roman Catholic Bishops of Salford it had a chequered and chilling history and was known for 200 years as 'Skull House'. Manchester’s Cathedral might not be as striking as that of some other cities, but it’s undoubtedly a beautiful building with a remarkably ancient feel to it – even though much of it was renovated in the wake of World War II bomb damage.
