About this deal

We run a range of lab tests under controlled conditions, using the Imatest Master testing suite. Photos of test charts are taken across the range of apertures and zooms (where available), then analyzed for sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberrations.

I had the opportunity to try both, with an unprejudiced choice to make, cost irrelevant. I found the operation of the f2 to be in a whole different league, I think no-one disputes that, but optically they were closer than I thought. The f1.4 was really nice from f4 down into the corners, where the f2 stays a bit smeary until f8. In the centre the f2 was superb, especially at f2.8. The great thing about this kit is that you’ve got one for beautiful bokeh, and one that is flexible enough for video and wider shots. Between the Fujinon 35mm f1.4 and the f2, center sharpness is very close. The Fujinon 35mm f1.4 is sharper than the f2 at those faster apertures like f1.4, f2 and even f4. In the closeup view of the bridge stone pillars, the view at f8 appears to give the edge to the 1.4. I base that on the conduit coupling on one of the conduits in the shot. You can upload: image, audio, video, document, spreadsheet, interactive, text, archive, code, other. f2 Advantages– Weather Sealed, Internal Focus Design, 9 blade aperture which produces better bokeh at tighter apertures, faster AF, silent aperture and focusing. In case of Windows (Internet Explorer / FireFox / Google Chrome), hold down the “Control” key and “F5” key. The XF 35mm F2 is weather sealed and its focusing is all done internally. This is great if you are pairing the 35mm F2 with a weather sealed Fujifilm body like the X-Pro2, X-T2, or X-H1 as this will ensure that your kit is nice and safe should you encounter some less than ideal weather. Since its focusing is internal, this also means that the lens always stays the same length and is very compact – its an excellent companion to any Fujifilm camera. Standard prime lenses come in all shapes and sizes nowadays, from teeny pancake optics to huge chunks of fast glass. Helped by its APS-C specification, the Fujinon XF35mm f/1.4 R is compact and lightweight, while the 1.5x crop factor makes gives it a standard field of view, equivalent to using a 52.5mm focal length on a full-frame camera.

The only reason I wouldn’t recommend this lens is if you are very concerned about weather resistance. In which case, either the Fuji 23mm f2 or the Fuji 35mm f2 will be a better fit for you. This is the only lens I own, and I’m not sure that I’m missing out on much (maybe the 23mm 1.4…).Magic is a great word for it, but really it makes sense when you think about it – the in focus portion of your shot is fantastically sharp, and the fall-off and bokeh is like something out of a dream. The colors are absolutely fantastic. Some of the brilliant people at Fujifilm once said that with these lenses they considered how people remember images as much as how to make a technically excellent lens, and I think it shows with the 35mm f1.4.If you’re shooting pictures of people, nature, or still-life the lens is absolutely fantastic.I tried the 35mm f2, and while it’s a high quality, very sharp and snappy lens, the light and transition to the bokeh feel a little too “perfect” (clinical? formal?) for my taste.Great post! I have to agree that this test shows that the f/1.4 copy is terrible. It looks nothing like what my old one produced on a consistent basis. Though, the f/2 version isn’t extremely impressive. I shot a few of both while testing them at a camera shop, inside and outside as well. The thing is, the f/1.4 IS definitely sharper (if only slightly) than the f/2 version from f/2 on up. Slight, but noticeable. Even with the ‘paper specs’ being different, the f/1.4 only loses in the autofocus department, and softness in the corners (which, for a lens with this sort of aperture is expected anyway.) The reality is, both of these lenses will give you stunning, sharp photos with great bokeh. The real question is whether you are looking for something that is also a wide angle lens or not, and your budget. The 23mm f1.4 is definitely in the upper price range when it comes to Fuji lenses. Detailed specifications for the lens, along with MTF charts and other useful data can be found in our lens database. X-Pro1 + XF35mmF1.4 R @ 35mm, ISO 400, 1/50, f/5.0 Handling and Build

If you’re looking for something cheaper to start out with, the f/2 WR is the better lens. Its lower price and weather resistance makes it a great starting lens for anyone getting into the field. When looking at size alone, I can’t really say there is much of an advantage to the 35mm f2 over the f1.4. Both are small and light enough to be comfortable on any Fujifilm camera. Color fringing is entirely negligible at wide apertures but can be a little noticeable towards the edges and corners between f/4 and f/16. When looking at these sample photos, you can really see they are almost indistinguishable with color and contrast when I edit them in the same style. But with the 35mm f1.4, I get to play a little more with that depth.

Another, later 35mm prime lens from Fuji is the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2. Released in 2015, it was a more affordable alternative to the f/1.4. As far as resolution goes, the new XF 35mm f/2 is showing a distinct advantage across the frame at this focus distance, especially at wider apertures. Bokeh The lens is also compatible with allFuji X-mount cameras, making it a convenient option for anyone with more than one camera from this series.

In terms of accessories, the lens ships with a premium plastic square-shaped lens hood and a soft lens bag. Focal Range f1.4 Advantages– Full stop brighter, shallower depth (somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of a stop), overall better performance with sharpness, beautiful focus falloff, vignetting and distortion. To start with, let’s talk about the focal length. This is a very personal choice not just for Fujifilm users but every photographer who loves travel and street photography. Do you shoot with a 23mm lens or a 35mm lens (equivalent to 35mm and 50mm in full frame terms)? Shooting test charts actually shows the center of the two lenses are identical sharpness, but the 35 f/2 never manages to catch the 35 f/1.4 at the edges. The Fujifilm XF 35mm F1.4 R is a relatively compact prime lens, at least when compared to its DSLR equivalents, but it's still quite a bit bigger than a comparable Micro Four Thirds lens, weighing 187g and measuring 55mm in length. As you can see in the pictures above, it complements the top-of-the-range Fujifilm X-Pro1 very well, not feeling at all front-heavy and more than matching the body in terms of its build quality.
