a b c d e "A scathing critique of Paul Kagame's government". The Economist. 27 March 2021 . Retrieved 6 April 2021.

This is story about family, love, secrets and lies. Who can be trusted? I found it very difficult to work that one out, right till the very end. Such a great story - highly addictive. a b "New book shows a very different side to Rwanda's Paul Kagame". France 24. 5 April 2021 . Retrieved 6 April 2021. I finished this book in less than 2 days - that's how fast the pace is and how engaging the story is. I gave it 2.5 stars rounded up to 3. The plot twist is good (I did see it coming). Perhaps the explanation for the motive is a bit too convenient.

i have read three books by this author in three days and i cannot stop omg. three five star reads in a row? READ HER BOOKS NOW With the predictable compliance of the congenitally murderous, venal Mobutu Sese Seko, France gave safe conduct to the perpetrators of the Rwanda genocide into the Democratic Republic of Cong (DRC), Zaire, as it was then. All in all, while not my favorite by this author (that would be Last Seen Alive), this definitely came a close second. An eye-opening tale of dark pasts, motherhood, and heartbreaking realities, I found myself spellbound by Douglas’s masterful words more times than I could count. After all, between the manipulation and the deviousness, who knew where this story was going to end up? I mean, besides very near to perfection, of course… Rating of 4.5 stars. All of which ignores the fact that relations between Rwanda and South Africa, deteriorated to the point of tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats, because South Africa did jump to the conclusion advanced by Wrong. Rwanda’s position was that all evidence should be investigated, and any suspects brought before the courts. This hodgepodge of different personalities along with strange occurrences eventually cumulates into a set of circumstances where all are pointing fingers and nobody knows who is innocent or guilty and quite who to actually trust.

Colgate University academic Susan Thomson said that it was "one of the best books on Rwanda I’ve read in a long time" and "a masterclass in investigative journalism". [15] In Foreign Affairs Phil Clark argues that Wrong is insufficiently critical of the Rwanda National Congress as well as Karegaya and disagrees that foreign aid should be cut over human rights violations and assassinations. [16]

It’s clear something happened when they lived in London but it’s not until later in the book that we find out what this was. i love how she made every character unreliable, i couldn’t make up my mind on who to trust. unexpected plot twists everywhere. and a perfect satisfying ending. We find out that Kirsty and Selena were very close as children but had a big falling out when they were eighteen, and this is the last time they saw each other. I know many Rwandans say they love Kagame and that they’re incredibly proud of the work he’s done since coming into power at the turn of the century. It’s also difficult to tell though, in a country where dissent can mean death, just how many of these staunch “supporters” are really being truthful with what they say publicly. It is part of what the genocide scholar, Gregory Stanton, described as the ten stages of genocide, starting with “the classification of the population, symbolisation of those classifications, discrimination of the targeted group, dehumanisation of the pariah group.”

a b c Birrell, Ian (20 March 2021). "Do Not Disturb by Michela Wrong review — the making of a monster". The Times . Retrieved 6 April 2021. What you do have here though, is a good read, not challenging but holding its own on the enjoyment scale without taxing plots and characters. Okay to be completely honest I'm not fully satisfied with the book but at same time it isn't that bad. It depends really (considering I have a pretty dark mind so I was kinda expecting more) I mean it's not boring as I read this in one sitting and gave it 4 stars. Dobbs, Michael (30 April 2021). "Review | He's been hailed as Rwanda's hero. But is he really his country's villain?". Washington Post . Retrieved 3 May 2021. As Karegeya tells it, the breaking point came with the RPF’s killing of old Ugandan comrades as the two countries fought over their plunder of the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo. The spy chief’s dissent lands him in prison and exile in South Africa, where he and other disillusioned Rwandan officials pose a particular danger to Kagame. Karegeya quite literally knew where the bodies were buried. A few years later, he was among them.

She has determined that Rwanda, or rather ‘Kagame’ was responsible for the murder. We are assured there would be incontrovertible evidence, were the government of South Africa not suppressing it to shield Rwanda.

Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, participates in a session at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. (AP Photo/Markus Schreiber) All in all, this is an enjoyable read and is well written and thought out as always. However, it just didn't have the wow factor that her previous books have had. I look forward to the authors future releases. Claire Douglas has written another fantastic book which is really thrilling, deliciously creepy and utterly brilliant.

Moving to Wales to start afresh Kirsty and her family open a guesthouse in the hope of a quite simple life away from London. what happens is that her entire family end up staying in the guest house and the books takes on an Agatha Christie vibe it being so claustrophobic and dark. Adrian's illness, the girls difficult relocation and Kirsty's mum coming to stay and work with them all tightens the circle around Kirsty leaving her to feel that she has no alternative other than to keep secrets ! I didn't know much about Rwanda apart from the atrocious 1994 genocide of the Tutsi's by the Hutu's, and a vague notion that ever since it has been relatively peaceful and developing well. It turns out the truth is much more complex.
