About this deal

Eleanor Laura Davan Mills ( née Woodward; born 31 May 1991) is a British food writer and businesswoman, best known for the 'Deliciously Ella' food blog and brand. There were so many off handed comments about what ingredients would give you "absolutely glowing skin" and that was quite a turn off. Fast, creative make-at-home solutions. By turns charming and practical, Woodward caters to the eater who wants to eat less sugar, flour, meat, and dairy….A warm authorial voice and relatively simple recipes make this another worthy addition to the conscious cook’s library.”— Publishers Weekly This recipe books guides you through more than 100 easy recipes, including main meals, side dishes and sweet treats. There is plenty of variation, and you truly don't miss the meat or dairy! Many of the recipes come with a short introduction to tell you what non-vegan dish it could replace, e.g. the sweet potato cakes (one of my new favourites) are Ella's version of traditional fish cakes.

Overall, I am very satisfied with what is a well-written and interesting book. It will be particularly useful for those with not much experience with healthy eating.

If you ever need living, breathing proof of the power of food to transform lives, Ella Woodward is your girl ... In a fad diet-obsessed age, it's Woodward's balanced, holistic approach to food that's so refreshing. * Radio Times *

Apple puree is super-simple. Peel and core 20 red apples. Chop into bite sized pieces. Place in a large saucepan with 2cm of water. Cook for 40 minutes, or until very soft, then blend till smooth. Add 3 tablespoons date or maple syrup, or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, or both. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze in portions." I came across a discussion recently (maybe with Adam Gopnik?) that looked at the different types of cookbooks that's similar to how I break them down too. Some of reference tomes (Harold Mcgee for instance), some focus on technique (typically the ones from famous cooking schools), some are by famous chefs or celebrities, some tell good stories (see my review of Mamushka), some go into detail about nutrition or cooking for a dietary restriction (one of the best I've come across is "how can it be gluten-free" by America's Test Kitchen) and so on. YMMV: I cook a lot and I’m currently going through a bunch of Ottolenghi recipes so this book was a bit… bland for my taste. In the main, the recipes are easy. Sometimes the casualness hides the effort involved. Here's an unedited example (a paragraph found within the recipe for Courgette Banana Bread): And (ahem) some cookbooks I think are helped by the author being attractive! This is not to disparage Ella's work or story but it's hard to imagine that her blog/book would be as successful if she were a, for want of a better word, minger.

It's very helpful that it can be frozen and used as a sweetener for various recipes. That part is great. But peeling and coring 20 apples whilst not technically difficult, is going to take a while for someone who doesn't cook that often.Elizabeth Grice (23 January 2016). "Deliciously Ella: 'There's a pressure to be sparkly and shiny all the time' ". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 10 March 2016. This book has lots of attractive pictures of food (and a much higher percentage of the author than the standard cookbook). The recipes that I've tried were fine (nothing revelatory for but I can see how they may be helpful for people who used to eat badly). So, I suppose I am the target audience for this because I am gluten free, vegan and not eating sugar but this sure didn't feel like it was written for anyone other than ladies.
