About this deal

On Sunday evening, a coronation concert will be staged at Windsor Castle and broadcast live on the BBC from 8pm. Sadly, usregular folk can’t actually go inside the abbey for the coronation. You have to be a notable person with an official invitation. One of the most eagerly anticipated events is the celebratory concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May, which starts at 8pm and is expected to last between two and three hours, with all the action broadcast live by the BBC.

The coronation elicited both celebrations and protest in the United Kingdom, with surveys carried out before the event suggesting that the British public was ambivalent towards the ceremony and its funding. The events in London and Windsor drew large crowds, but were also protested against by republican groups; 64 people were arrested on the day, which drew criticism from Human Rights Watch. Other celebrations included street parties, volunteering, special commemorative church services, and a concert at Windsor Castle on 7 May. The response in the other Commonwealth realms was similarly mixed; while there were many celebrations, some government officials and indigenous groups took the opportunity to voice republican sentiments and call for reparatory justice. She will then join the broadcaster’s coronation line-up, which includes royal events commentator Alastair Bruce and presenters Kay Burley and Anna Botting.King Harold Godwinson was almost certainly crowned at the newly consecrated Westminster Abbey in January 1066, although this is not specifically confirmed by any contemporary source. [2] If Harold's coronation is included, this was the 41st at the abbey. On the day Charles and Camilla are crowned, Channel 4 says its schedule “will provide an escape from the pomp and ceremony”.

The service, conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, began with the King and Queen having a silent moment of prayer before seating themselves on their chairs of estate, made for the 1953 coronation. [97] [107] [108] In a new element of the service, the king was welcomed by one of the Children of the Chapel, to which he replied that he came " not to be served but to serve". [109] Paul Mealor's "Coronation Kyrie" was sung in Welsh by Sir Bryn Terfel. After this the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lady Elish Angiolini, Christopher Finney, and Baroness Amos stood facing east, south, west, and north and in turn asked the congregation to recognise Charles as king; the crowd replied "God save King Charles!" each time. [97] [95] Charles was then presented with a new Bible by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. [97] Oath and accession declaration [ edit ] The Royal Family are expected on the palace balcony in the early afternoon for the fly-past, which will be broadcast live. The British republican group Republic protested against the coronation in London; its chief executive, Graham Smith, called the ceremony a "celebration of hereditary power and privilege". [255] The organisation anticipated an attendance of around 1,500–2,000 in Trafalgar Square, the focus of the London protests, with smaller groups of one to three people spread throughout the procession route. [256] [257] According to BBC News, there were hundreds of protesters. [258] Republic encouraged protesters to wear yellow during the protest. [257] [259] I'll be sad if that's true but it may just be another part of the 'de-formalising' of the British royal world that has taken place over the last several decades."Radio 2 DJs Zoe Ball and Dermot O’Leary, Radio 4’s Martha Kearney and royal correspondent Jonny Dymond will also be among those presenting the weekend’s coronation coverage on BBC Radio and BBC Sounds. Natural England will mark the coronation with the creation of the King's Series of National Nature Reserves, which will see five major national nature reserves named every year for the next five years. [153] [154] A new Coronation Garden in Newtownabbey which features music, moving plants, bubbles and a large metal bandstand named in honour of Charles and Camilla was opened by the King and Queen on 24 May. [155] [156] In August, a government fund was launched to plant thousands of trees to mark the coronation and celebrate Charles' interst in the environment. [157] Memorabilia [ edit ] As opposed to his mother's coronation in 1953, the 74-year-old monarch is reported to favour a more subdued ceremony this time around, with less elaborate regalia.

Take That, Katy Perry and Lionel Ritchie are among the stars performing at the grounds of Windsor Castle. For the first time in recent memory, the Queen Consort will don an old crown during the ceremony rather than a freshly made one. Edwards will be standing outside Westminster Abbey on the Saturday as it opens its doors to the congregation, and other presenters offering a rolling coverage of the day. Some 2,000 guests have been invited to the ceremony in the Abbey – a fraction of the 8,000 who attended Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953. Other celebrations organised by provincial governments included events organised at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building on 5 May and the Manitoba Legislative Building on 6 May. [201] [202] The government of Ontario hosted a fair at Queen's Park in Toronto and offered free admission to provincially-owned attractions and 39 provincial parks on the date of the coronation. [198] [203] A program by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador to distribute eastern white pine seedlings from the Wooddale Provincial Tree Nursery to the public was launched on 6 May to honour Charles's focus on environmentalism. [204]The coronation was a state event funded by the British government, which also decided the guest list. [22] Approximately 2,200 guests from 203 countries were invited. [23] They included members of the British royal family, representatives from the Church of England and other British faith communities, prominent politicians from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and foreign heads of state. [24] Some of the most fashionable royals and celebrities in the world were in attendance; the unique occasion saw Queen Letizia of Spain and Queen Rania of Jordan, mingle in the pews with Katy Perry and Dame Emma Thompson, Jill Biden and Olena Zelenska. Other stylish members of the British Royal family were there too, including the Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Beatrice and Zara Tindall. Our guests will reflect a range of views on what the new reign will mean for Britain and the Commonwealth.” Coronation Day schedule
