About this deal

If you're looking for a little bit of luxury, you don't necessarily need to reach for the priciest hot-chocolate brand. Our taste test revealed two clear winners – and they weren't the most expensive or well-known options. The priciest of the bunch, Hotel Chocolat's luxury offering has the joint-highest cocoa content (70%) of all the solid hot chocolates we tested, and it's also vegan-friendly. If an evening hot chocolate is more of a regular habit than a festive treat, powdered hot chocolate is typically cheaper and simpler to whip up. Clipper products are made with pure natural ingredients. We use only the highest-quality sources, add nothing artificial - no wonder they taste so good! Both the sweetness and strength of the chocolate flavour satisfied most tasters, though half would have preferred a creamier finish.

However, it contains the highest amount of sugar (77g per 100g), so you might want to go easy on the marshmallows. Well the secret is… there is no secret. Just the best quality Fairtrade ingredients. If you start off with the best ingredients, you simply can’t go wrong. And don’t worry, we’ve taste-tested our hot chocolate many, many times, just to be sure. For some reason we weren’t short of volunteers for this job. There were other issues, too – as well as an underwhelming appearance and aroma, the majority of the panel found this drink wasn't sweet or creamy enough for their taste. A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines.

If you can’t get enough of a Chocolate Orange, this one is for you! Carve 2 or 3 strips of orange rind (the skin) and let them steep in your drink for a while before drinking. That citrus flavour is a delight.

Clipper products are made with pure natural ingredients. We use only the highest-quality sources, add nothing artificial. No wonder they taste so good. Tasters were less impressed with the other hot-chocolate powders we tested. Asda's version is the cheapest, but also came last overall. The products were tested in September 2022 by a large panel of consumers who regularly buy and consume hot chocolate. The make-up of the panel broadly represents the demographic profile of adults in the UK. Natural, fair and delicious: each divine hit of Clipper Fairtrade Hot Chocolate comes in a compact space saving 28g sachet, perfect for popping on your hotel, guesthouse, B&B or self-catering property welcome tray.

See which supermarket hot chocolate beat the fancy flake brands below, plus the full rundown of results and our top tips for making the best hot chocolate at home. If you’re avoiding moo-milk, our hot chocolates can be made with dairy alternatives for a dairy-free delight. If you’re dodging the dairy, we recommend coconut milk for a tropical spin on your evening indulgence. This 70% cocoa Fairtrade hot chocolate made a great first impression on our tasters with its punchy chocolatey smell. This also came through in the taste, though almost half of them found the chocolate flavour too strong and not sweet enough.Ahhh hot chocolate. The mere mention of this deliciously indulgent drink is relaxing. It makes us think of beautiful winter walks and warm, cosy fires. But what we’re interested in is the perfect hot chocolate. Nothing short of perfection will do. We ran two hot-chocolate tests: one on hot chocolates made of solid chocolate flakes, such as Hotel Chocolat, Charbonnel & Walker and Cupsmith; and another of premium hot-chocolate powders, including brands such as Twinings and Lindt, as well as supermarket rivals. Play around with toppings and flavours. Adding ginger or mint syrup will make your hot chocolate feel festive, as will garnishing with marshmallows, whipped cream or extra chocolate shavings on top. You can also sprinkle chocolate powder – or spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon – on top for a warming edge.

Twinings stood out from the rest, and is relatively widely available, while Clipper proved a good second choice: Best Buy: Twinings Swiss Hot Chocolate - 78% Is there anything better when the weather’s chilly than a mug of delicious hot chocolate? It warms you up right away and feels like such a treat, especially after a long day out in the cold. Buying a tub of hot chocolate powder means you can indulge in this delightful drink whenever you feel like it, and saves you from spending your hard-earned cash on an overpriced cup from a coffee shop. The panelists rated the taste, mouthfeel, aroma and appearance of each product, and told us what they liked and disliked about each one. Best Value Christmas Food - see which mince pies, sparkling wines and more came top for taste and value in our 2022 testsOur rich and luxurious instant hot chocolate is easy to prepare by simply adding hot water. It’s perfect for cosying up with on a cold day and ready in next to no time. Twinings was our panel’s favourite powdered hot chocolate. The majority thought the chocolate flavour was spot on, with a lovely creamy texture and appetising deep brown colour. Clipper products are made with pure ingredients and a clear conscience. We use only the highest-quality sources, add nothing artificial and strive to improve the welfare of the workers. No wonder Clipper tastes so good. It's a good option if you're keen to buy Fairtrade, or prefer a less sugary taste. Around one quarter of our tasters rated Twinings too sweet and Clipper not sweet enough, so it might come down to your personal preference as to which one you buy. Luxurious, rich and smooth, Clipper's hot chocolates are truly delectable. Not only that, they’ve got a conscience too – Clipper's hot chocolates are made with Fairtrade cocoa and sugar.
