The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis: A book in which siblings transport through a wardrobe into an alternate world that they must save from an evil queen. Over the course of the series, discuss how Emily and Navin have changed. Have students bring in evidence to support their positions. After a terrible accident, Emily, Navin and their mother move in to what seems to be the most boring old house in the WORLD! Yet, on the first night of the move, Emily and Navin discover a strange amulet in the library. Emily, while always wary of the voice in the stone, is finding new evidence to support her misgivings. She and Trellis go into the past and find that Max is not exactly what he seems to be and that he has been controlled by the Voice of his Amulet. Emily also discovers that the Voice of her Amulet is more sinister than she originally feared. Emily may have taken inspiration from Will Vandom, a fictional character from a television animated fantasy series W.I.T.C.H. They share countless similarities, both with fiery red hair and heirlooms gifted from their elderly family members, among many other things.

Emily Hayes (エミリー・ヘイズ Emily Hayes) is the main protagonist of Kazu Kibuishi's graphic novel series Amulet. In the series, she is a Stonekeeper, a leading member of the Resistance and Guardian Council, and, as of The Cloud Searchers, best friends and partners with Prince Trellis. She is the daughter of Karen and David Hayes, the great-granddaughter of Silas Charnon, the older sister of Navin Hayes, and the future mother of Moze. Emily asks the voice its name, to which it reveals that it is named Ikol, and she says that now Ikol is following her, not the other way around, and asks if it trusts her, to which it says yes. Then, Emily goes to the Elf King's fortress where she confronts Ikol, ripping the mask off his face and ending the Elf King's influence, once and for all, on her way to return to Alledia. Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: A story in which a girl falls through a rabbit hole and finds herself in an alternate reality. Silas's old helper robots determine that Karen was poisoned and needs an antidote, but the nearest city is 300 miles away. To take her to the city as soon as possible, the robots cause the entire house to be transformed into a giant robot. The giant robot, with everyone inside, walks through the water surrounding Silas's house, climbs out of the hole to the surface and starts walking across the landscape to the city, leading them to the antidote. History/Social Studies: In Book Five: Prince of the Elves (p. 58), Vigo tells Emily that, “Sometimes personal desires and ambitions can cloud the judgment of even our brightest minds.” Have students search for examples in history that support Vigo’s statement. Language Usage: Search, chart, and discuss literary devices used in Amulet. You may want to compare other ways to write the same ideas in an effort to show the value of these devices. Over the course of the series, we frequently question the motivations of Trellis and of Max. Discuss why Kibuishi has us question their motives, and discuss how Kibuishi creates these ambiguities. In book 8, Vigo asks Riva Ash to help lead the elves as the responsibilities will be overwhelming for Trellis so they both have to help.As revealed in book eight ( Supernova), Emily will eventually have a son named Moze. Present Emily initially met Moze in the Void, but is currently unaware that he is her son. Future Emily was seen to love Moze dearly when she was a mother.
