Hi Jeff! Love to be able to help you but not sure we have enough info yet… It sounds like you’re buying a 50 quart bag of potting soil, correct? If so, that will fill quite a few 10″x12″ pots, but you didn’t specify how many pots you plan to get. As for whether you should top-dress the soil surface of your pots with mulch, our general answer is YES, however only do that once your potted plants are at least relatively large seedlings. If you put mulch on top of un-sprouted seeds in your pot, the seeds might not be able to punch through the mulch. Hope this helps! Transplant seedlings to your 5-gallon fabric pots when they’ve grown 1-2 sets of leaves in seedling plugs, or when the leaves reach the edges if you’ve germinated in a solo cup. Keeping reasonable notes on what I transplanted something into when I’m using recycled pots has been a challenge made by your post. Diameter and height are great references but you also added lots of helpful tidbits and made it into a Google doc. This is the kind of the thing the Internet was meant to do. If you thought your brain cells were fried researching pot sizes babies can do better job of destruction using sleep-deprivation! Believe it or not, it even gets to be funny over time. We initiated 12/12 when the plants are half the final desired height. This was about 5 weeks after they were put in the tent. These two plants are now 47 days old. These are both autoflowers(Onyx) they are from the same batch of seeds, and they were planted at the same time in the same soil. They were both grown under exactly the same conditions. The only difference is the one on the left is a 3 gal pot and the one on the right is a 5 gal pot. The shorter onyx is a pretty solid bud from the main stem up and it's only 15 inches tall. The bigger plant now has a huge main cola and several large secondary colas. (these pic's were taken well over a week ago)The 5 gal pot looks like it will have at least 20% more bud than the 3 gal pot. Anything over 5 gal is pointless for auto's because they just won't get any bigger in a 7 gal pot vs a 5 gal pot.Is organic growing in your future? Never use garden soil or topsoil for container gardening. You must use a potting mix blend. Not only will it not contain the nutrients needed for proper growth, but it won’t have the proper pH balance for your trees. Stills with copper components are the better option because they remove sulfides, which improves the flavor of your moonshine. When I get the chance I like to use clear pots. That way I can see how the roots are looking and depending on that is when/how I water.
