About this deal

Grey / Non-Formulary (undergoing assessment): Work is ongoing and will be reviewed at a future APC meeting. Deficiency of vitamin D may occur when your diet or lifestyle does not provide you with enough vitamin D or when your body requires more vitamin D (for instance when you are pregnant).

Vitamin D also plays a role in the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and helps maintain normal bones and teeth. Low levels of vitamin D can increase your risk of Osteoporosis. If Colecalciferol is combined with metabolites or analogues of vitamin D careful monitoring of serum calcium levels is recommended.Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. This includes any medicines which you have bought without a prescription. Allowances should be made for vitamin D supplements, other vitamin D containing medicines or from other sources. Low dose for maintenance or prevention (only prescribed in exceptional circumstances where self-care is not possible):

Valupak Vitamin D 3 is suitable for vegetarians but is not suitable for vegans since D 3 contains lanolin. Who Should Get Medical Advice Before Using Valupak Vitamin D 3? Primary care prescribers encouraged to prescribe by brand name to avoid unlicensed specials being dispensed. The cytotoxic agent actinomycin and imidazole antifungal agents interfere with vitamin D activity by inhibiting the conversion of 25-hydroxyvitamin D to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D by the kidney enzyme, 25-hydroxyvitamin D-1-hydroxylase.Dosing doesn’t fit with local Vitamin D guidelines. Formulary options for Vitamin D products will be reviewed alongside the guideline update. In primary care should be prescribed as Vitamins A and D capsules BPC 1973. 1 capsule = vitamin A 4000 units and vitamin D 400 units. Acute or chronic overdose of Colecalciferol can cause hypercalcaemia, an increase in the serum and urinary concentrations of calcium. The symptoms of hypercalcaemia are not very specific and consist of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea often in the early stages and later constipation, anorexia, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint pain, muscle weakness, polydipsia, polyuria formation of renal calculi, nephrocalcinosis, kidney failure, calcification of soft tissues, changes in ECG measurements, arrhythmias and pancreatitis. In rare and isolated cases there are reports that hypercalcaemia is fatal. Soluble Tablet - Soluble tablet is restricted NUH only: For use within critical care as a micronutrient supplement for patients with a naso-gastric tube who are unable to take oral medication. Marketed as a food supplement. Water soluble preparation of Vitamin K - to be used in patients with hepatic disease or biliary obstruction ( including during pregnancy).

The supporting prescribing guideline must have been agreed by the relevant secondary care trust D&TC(s) and approved by the Nottinghamshire APC.

Recommended Product!

Drugs leading to fat malabsorption, e.g. orlistat, liquid paraffin, cholestyramine, may impair the absorption of Colecalciferol. Although most other medications are safe to take with Valupak Vitamin D 3, it is always best to seek advice from your doctor before beginning to take this supplement. If you take any kind of steroid medication you should avoid Valupak Vitamin D 3 as it can interfere with the processes. Side effects An alternative unlicensed product is available for those with nut allergies - named patient use only. Cost in primary care may differ significantly.
