A study published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology found that myrrh (Commiphora molmol) emulsion was able to protect against lead (PbAc)-induced hepatotoxicity. These create what are known as herbal vinegars or herbal glycerites. They are essentially tinctures without the alcohol. The remodeling stage started earlier in the myrrh group than in the other groups. The myrrh group also displayed good immunomodulation and antibacterial/fungal responses. Similarly, Kimura et al reported that myrrh has a more marked effect on adjuvant-induced granuloma than other anti-inflammatory preparations such as hydrocortisone. 10 According to the hadith of Muhammad, narrated by Abu Nuaim on the authority of Abban bin Saleh bin Anas, Muhammad said, "Fumigate your houses with mugwort, myrrh and thyme." ( Kanz-ul-Ummal). [14] The Encyclopedia of Islamic Herbal Medicine mentions the same hadith: "The Messenger of Allah stated, 'Fumigate your houses with al-shih, murr, and sa'tar.'" The author states that this use of the word "murr" refers specifically to Commiphora myrrha. [15] The other two are Al-Shih (possibly mugwort) and Sa'tar (or Za'atar - thyme). When taken by mouth: Myrrh is commonly consumed in foods as a flavoring agent. Myrrh is possibly safe when used as medicine in doses of 400 mg three times daily for up to 12 months. It's usually well-tolerated. But taking large doses of myrrh is possibly unsafe. Doses greater than 2-4 grams can cause kidney problems and heart rate changes.

Additionally, if you have oral surgery, it may be best to avoid myrrh mouthwash during healing. A test-tube study found that stitches — especially silk ones — can degrade when exposed to myrrh, though they held up in the doses typically found in mouthwash ( 16). Myrrh is mentioned in the New Testament as one of the three gifts (with gold and frankincense) that the magi "from the East" presented to the Christ Child ( Matthew 2:11). Myrrh was also present at Jesus' death and burial. Jesus was offered wine and myrrh at his crucifixion ( Mark 15:23). According to John's Gospel, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea brought a 100-pound mixture of myrrh and aloes to wrap Jesus' body ( John 19:39). The Gospel of Matthew relates that as Jesus went to the cross, he was given vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink (Matthew 27:34); the Gospel of Mark describes the drink as wine mingled with myrrh (Mark 15:23). Nature's Answer's bottle says that one serving size contains 2000mg of "Extract*"; the asteric remark says that this is "equivalent to 1000mg of Myrrh Gum". I understood this to mean that one serving size contained 1000mg of Myrrh Gum. I was confused as to why the extract (2000mg) was higher than the equivalent raw gum (1000mg), and would have expected it to be reversed; e.g., 1000mg of extract being equivalent to 2000mg of raw gum. Perhaps this means that the total combined weight of the ethanol plus the 1000mg of Myrrh gum equaled 2000mL. Liquid myrrh, or stacte, which was written about by Pliny, [6] was formerly a greatly valued ingredient of Jewish holy incense, but is no longer commercially available. The team of researchers looked for a remedy in Myrrh, whose antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, sugar-reducing and liver-protective properties have been used traditionally for the treatment of several diseases. They found that Myrrh induced the production of several antioxidant and detoxifying proteins in the liver, kidneys and cerebrum.

Myrrh may be administered as a tincture or as part of dental powders, teas, mouth rinses, and gargles. Myrrh doses and formulations used in studies evaluating its antiparasitic effects (ie, in schistosomiasis, fascioliasis) have varied. Myrrh was recorded in the first century BC by Diodorus Siculus to have been traded overland and by sea via Nabatean caravans and sea ports, which transported it from Southern Arabia to their capital city of Petra, from which it was distributed throughout the Mediterranean region. [13] In the New Testament [ edit ] The utilization of herbs for medicinal purposes has dramatically increased worldwide. Further research is required to clearly determine the various properties of these herbs, their optimal doses, forms, and their adverse effects and toxicity. Other factors should be also considered, such as the type, size, and location of the wound, as well as vascular supply, infection, and other conditions that might complicate the healing process. This is because different compounds found in plants are extracted by using differing ratiosof water toalcohol.Caspar Neumann, William Lewis, The chemical works of Caspar Neumann, M.D.,2nd Ed., Vol 3, London, 1773 p.55 Massoud AM, Shalaby HA, El Khateeb RM, et al. Limited clinical studies suggest myrrh is successful in treating wounds and ulcers, largely due to its anti-inflammatory qualities. In addition, myrrh has sufficient antioxidant and analgesic properties that provide additional benefits. Myrrh is useful as a topical agent to facilitate drying and provide wound cleansing. Walsh 2010 Dosing When applied to the skin: Myrrh is possibly safe for most people. It's been used safely in a diluted bath for up to 7 days. It might cause a skin rash in some people.

Wound healing is a complex dynamic process that the body undergoes to eliminate an injury and restore cellular and tissue structures. Wound healing has been divided into three distinct phases: the inflammatory, proliferative, and remodeling phases. 26 When compared with natural healing, pharmacotherapeutic agents may be toxic, ineffective, contraindicated, or have serious side effects. Consequently, the use of natural remedies has been on the rise. 8, 17 A wide range of traditionally used alternative medicines has been reported in the literature. Many of these medicines are used for chronic diseases, such as chronic renal pathologies, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. 17– 20 Among health care professionals, 51% of physicians and nurses reported that they had used herbal medication. 21 Despite the widespread use of herbal remedies, physicians are not always aware of the remedies that their patients use. 8, 22 Additionally, herbs are frequently used concomitantly with conventional medications. 22 The word myrrh corresponds to a common Semitic root m-r-r meaning "bitter", as in Arabic مُرّ murr and Aramaic ܡܪܝܪܐ mureera. Its name entered the English language by way of the Hebrew Bible, in which it is called מור mor, and also later as a Semitic loanword. [7] It appears in numerous pre-Hellenic sources up to the translation of the Tanakh into the Septuagint, and later makes it way into the Greek myth about Myrrha; in the Ancient Greek language, the related word μῠ́ρον ( múron), likely derived from a Semitic source, became a general term for perfume. Myrrh is also used to prepare the sacramental chrism used by many churches of both Eastern and Western rites. In the Middle East, the Eastern Orthodox Church traditionally uses oil scented with myrrh (and other fragrances) to perform the sacrament of chrismation, which is commonly referred to as "receiving the Chrism". In rats, pretreatment with an aqueous solution of C. molmol provided dose-dependent protection against the development of GI ulcers caused by ethanol 80%, sodium chloride 25%, sodium hydroxide 0.2 M, indomethacin, and combined ethanol-indomethacin treatment. This protective effect is believed to be attributed to C. molmol's effects on gastric mucus secretion and its ability to increase nucleic acid and nonprotein sulhydryl concentrations. al-Harbi 1997

Some herbs need more or less time. For example, Melissa is commonly only steeped for 24 hours so as to extract more of the volatile oil compounds and less of the tannins. Additionally, in one test-tube study, myrrh oil alone inhibited 43–61% of the growth of five fungi that cause skin conditions, including ringworm and athlete’s foot ( 17).

In test-tube studies, myrrh oil has strong effects against several infectious bacteria, including some drug-resistant ones ( 3, 8, 9, 10). Myrrh is mentioned as a rare perfume in several places in the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis 37:25, the traders to whom Jacob's sons sold their brother Joseph had " camels ... loaded with spices, balm, and myrrh," and Exodus 30:23–25 specifies that Moses was to use 500 shekels of liquid myrrh as a core ingredient of the sacred anointing oil. Human research is needed to confirm these benefits. However, if you want to try myrrh for general skin health, many natural ointments and soaps contain it. You can also apply diluted myrrh oil directly on your skin. But if you want something similar to a tincture, then use apple cider vinegar or food-grade glycerine to replace the alcohol. In recipes for tinctures, you can replace the alcohol with one of the following: In one test-tube study, myrrh oil at a low dilution of 0.1% killed all dormant Lyme disease bacteria, which can persist in some people after antibiotic treatment and continue to cause illness ( 11).Ibraheem WI, Hakami AA, Shafei AA, et al. Keep in mind that you should never swallow myrrh oral-care products, as high doses of myrrh can be toxic ( 15).
