About this deal

Combined feather and down pillows are good for comfort and support, eliminating pressure points and avoiding face squashing. But if you suffer from allergies, they’re a no-no.

Who it's best for: The Coop Home Goods pillow is suitable for all sleep positions thanks to its adjustable fill that lets you create your perfect height. It's also great for people who aren't sure what type of pillow to choose because it's a hybrid that combines foam and fiberfill. Where relevant, we also take into account other aspects including trial periods, washable covers and extra features – such as adjustable and ergonomic designs – all of which can play a part in our recommendations. Key features – Filling: Memory foam; Cover: Quilted scuba (neoprene) (machine washable); Sizes: 1 (60 x 35cm, 11/6cm height)The core of the pillow is made from bamboo and charcoal-infused memory foam (dubbed “CharcoCell foam” by Panda), perforated to promote airflow and wrapped in a quilted bamboo rayon cover. It’s softer than Panda’s standard bamboo pillow, instead looking and feeling more like the Otty pillow featured below. The cover is also silky soft and cool to the touch – so much so, that it’s almost a shame to put a pillowcase over the top of it. To help you get to grips with the basics, we've broken down the pros and cons of most common pillow fillings below. Tester notes: Users said this pillow was comfortable, supportive and kept them at a good temperature. They all enjoyed the versatility between its adjustable fill and two-sided design, with one saying, "My initial reaction was just 'Wow!'" Another told us, "This is literally the greatest pillow I have ever slept on."

Despite the high-tech credentials, the Simba Hybrid feels surprisingly like a traditional pillow – much more so than some all-foam competitors. Unlike microfibre and feather pillows, which tend to be either soft or supportive but rarely both, the Simba Hybrid finds that sweet spot right out of the box. It’s worth noting, however, that unlike the Simba Hybrid mattress, there’s no trial period with its bedding products. Another issue I encountered with testing other down pillows is a strong, musty smell that lingers long after first use. That didn’t apply to this one. I also noted that there is no sign of the feathers or down poking out through the tightly-woven cover. Then there are the more traditional, natural fillings to consider. These range from all types of feathers and down to wool filling.Latex pillowsfeel similar to memory foam, but they have more of a bouncy feel with less contouring. Another difference: Latex foam is typically made from rubber trees, so it's a good option for those that prefer organic materials. For this test we worked our way through a constant rotation of new pillows, looking for those that helped us sleep better. The first thing we learned is that material is a key factor. Broadly speaking, there are five types that you need to know about: washable cotton, luxurious down, memory foam for support, modern microfibre and hybrids of two or more of those. See the FAQ at the bottom of this article for a full explanation of the pros and cons of each. Down pillowstend to be the fluffiest, but a combination of down and feathers may be firmer and less expensive.

Synthetic pillows are usually made from polyester. As they’re hypoallergenic, they’re great for allergy sufferers and also affordable, lightweight and easy to care for. They’re good if you sleep in a variety of positions throughout the night too. But they aren’t as malleable or breathable as other pillows and they have the shortest lifespan of all pillows – with the filling often prone to clumping. Spend some time looking for a new pillow and you'll soon realise there are a whole host of pillow fillings available. From hollowfibre to goose down, synthetic to natural, the array of terms and materials can fast become a little overwhelming.

Standard– the ‘regular’ pillow size that you’ll typically see in most homes, hotels and B&Bs. A standard pillow measures 50cm x 75cm / 20" x 30" and is ideal for single, double and king size beds. The medium-density version was well-loved in our tests, but it's also available in soft and firm. On top of that, we love that its outer cover is a cotton sateen with double stitching around the hem to make sure the down doesn't poke through during use. Not too firm and not too plush, this pillow has Talalay latex on the inside surrounded by Purple's signature elastic grid material, which is super popular for its ability to feel equally soft and supportive. It also comes in three heights to fit a range of body types and combination sleepers.

The Tempur Ombracio is specially designed and shaped for front sleepers, with a star-like shape and the distinctive dimpled texture of all Tempur products. After wondering how on earth to find a pillowcase to fit it - really not necessary - I settled down to test it out and… eight hours later, I woke up. On top of that, it uses a synthetic down alternative, which is ideal for easy care and a lower cost. In fact, this set of two pillows costs less than some individual ones we tested from other brands. The fill also prevents it from feeling too dense, which can sometimes be a downside to pillows made for side sleepers. Another appealing feature is the amount of choice you get when it comes to size and feel. It’s available in soft, soft/medium and medium/firm variants, as well as standard (50 x 75cm), superking (50 x 90cm) and square (65 x 65cm) sizes.

Hybrid: A hybrid pillow combines multiple fill types, the most popular combination being foam and microfibre. This way, you get the benefit of a foam structure to support your head, and fluffy fibres for softness. Finding the best pillows for a good night’s sleep should be a pretty easy task. After all, there’s not that much science to finding a good pillow, right? With comfort you have to feel to believe, we found this pillow to be surprisingly plush yet still supportive, thanks to its innovative blend of shredded memory foam with soft and fluffy kapok (a natural fiber that’s similar to cotton, but feels silkier). The fill is also adjustable, so it works for multiple sleep styles or for people who often change positions. If you can, try to avoid sleeping this way where possible. If it's the only way you can get those zzz's, place amedium pillowunder your pelvis area. We’ve got more and more research showing how temperature is really crucial to sleep disturbances and the ability to stay in sleep,” says sleep psychologist Hope Bastine. “We also see a correlation between nightmares and high body temperature. So keeping the body temperature quite low is important for staying in deep sleep as well as being comfortable.”
