About this deal

Decoy Protagonist: Kyoko Byakuya is the point-of-view character for the first chapter, but after her changes from the amagami, she becomes more of a driving figure in other people's lives, with Wataro Tsuchiyado becoming the point-of-view character as he tries to investigate her story. Cut to 60 years later, the mountain has erupted again, leaving a cocooned Kyoko to be discovered by scientists surveying the area after the eruption. What follows is her being chased down by multiple people, including a cult of the darkness & a "no-name reporter", for her experience with the Amagami - "The Heavenly Hair". Spanning decades, important moments are depicted of not only Kyoko but also those chasing her culminating in many show downs and enlightened (no pun intended) discoveries. No spoilers! One of the more unsung elements of your work is how funny it can be, so I’m curious: what makes you laugh? In terms of what’s published in the United States, you’re one of the more prolific manga creators out there. These days your schedule is three books a year, and while some of that is reprinted material, it’s still quite a lot. When [fellow mangaka] Naoki Urasawa interviewed you for his show Manben one of the first things he noticed is that compared to many of your contemporaries you actually draw quite slowly and meticulously. Considering that approach to your craft paired with your significant publication schedule, what’s your workload like and how do you manage it?

If that sounds like a lot of groundwork for a single story to cover (and one less than 10 chapters at that), it is. And some of the threads don’t always pay off — the ultimate human villain of the story is more plot point than fleshed-out character — but this is still Ito making his trademark big swings and mostly hitting it out of the park.

You can really tell that Ito put a lot of work into the art of this series. It features some incredibly grotesque imagery, on par with Ito's best. The art has always been the main draw for me when it comes to Ito's manga, and Sensor delivers in spades. Driven to Suicide: One location in the story is a cliff known for suicides, so a family has set up an inn nearby to talk people down. The area is also plagued by hideous insects that jump under people's feet and resemble the bodies of previous suicide victims when squashed. Wataro Tsuchiyado gets a vision of Kyoko throwing herself off the cliff and goes to find her, but when it comes to pass, she does so to lead the suicide bugs off the cliff with her, and she survives the incident. On a basic level, a horror story involving a mysterious young woman who miraculously survived a volcanic eruption on the one hand, seemingly endowed with special faculties, and a chilling cult leader set on achieving godhood using her as a sort of mystical vessel... Pineda, Rafael (August 12, 2019). "Junji Ito's Travelogue of the Succubus Manga Ends". Anime News Network . Retrieved December 22, 2021. While the characters are beautifully designed, they are rather one dimensional. There are some interesting character moments however. Kyouka has one moment in particular in regards to her ability that is rather compelling, but for whatever reason this aspect of her character is never explored again. The reporter Wataru is fine as a narrator, but his motivation is rather flimsy. It's simply the classic horror trope of being compelled by something beyond his comprehension. It works of course, but needless to say nobody is going to be doing character studies on this manga.

Because generally Ito’s stories branch off into strange, unexpected directions - except they’re usually more interesting than this. Kyoko Byakuya, the mysterious girl, wasn’t an interesting figure - like all the characters, she’s one-dimensional and dull - and the volcano-centric stories did nothing for me. Not these strands of lava that are dubbed “angel hairs”, or what happened to early Christians in the past, or the bizarre suicide bugs digression - none of it. Sensor ( Japanese: センサー, Hepburn: Sensā), also known as Travelogue of the Succubus ( 夢魔の紀行, Muma no Kikō), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Junji Ito. It was serialized in Nemuki+ from August 2018 to August 2019 and published in a single volume in November 2019. Triggers for body horror, bugs, scenarios and descriptions drawn of self-termination, religion and cults, stalkers & obsessive behaviors depicted, immolation, burn trauma - forgive me if I left any out. Creepy Blue Eyes: Beniko Yamaoka has very unsettling-looking eyes which, in the art on the inside of the slip cover for the print edition that shows all the main characters, are a vibrant blue. Junji Ito’s comics have become really popular these last few years so demand might’ve caused him to rush projects like this. His publisher needs new product - hurry hurry hurry! - so he can’t spend enough time planning his stories and so you get books like this. That said, I don’t know for sure if that’s the case, I’m just speculating, so I’m probably wrong. Maybe he approaches all of his books the same way and Sensor just didn’t come out as well as the others?Dr. Kurodera, the psychiatrist that treated Kyoko, reveals that he came from the village Kiyokami that got caught in a volcanic eruption sixty years ago. He has a single strand of amigami in his hair, which he hoped would provide insight into treating Kyoko. But the terror of Sensor feels more of a piece with the work of David Lynch than influences like HP Lovecraft and Kazuo Umezu. With a winding narrative that at various points touches on time travel, warring cosmic gods, and bulbous bugs possessed by the souls of suicide victims, it’s a wholly unique installment in Ito-sensei’s oeuvre. While thinking of ideas for the book, Ito eventually settled on making a more character-driven narrative, since he had not tried doing one much before. While working on the book, Ito did not know how the story would end, instead opting to piece together the story while following the characters. So, this story starts with a young woman, Kyoko Byakuya, feeling drawn to this mountain, Mount Sengoku. Road trip. Arriving at the mountain, she meets a man who has been waiting for her. What? Yeah, the Amagami (angel-hair like cooled lava strands) told him she was coming and she's supposed to bring happiness. Uh huh okay. He leads her (hello? stranger danger!) to his village, Kiyumaki, which lies at the foot of the mountain. Story, 6: The volume is roughly tied together through the presence of Tsuchiyado Wataru, a journalist seeking information on the mysterious appearance of a golden-haired woman named Byakuya Kyouka. However, the first four chapters roughly felt like one-shots due to their relatively disconnected nature. Each explored a disturbing facet of the lore behind Byakuya Kyouka's appearance and the eruptions at Mount Sengoku. Though I enjoyed them for the most part and the conclusion was mostly

Written and illustrated by Junji Ito, the series began serialization in Nemuki+ on August 10, 2018. [3] The series completed its serialization on August 10, 2019. [4] The individual chapters were collected into a single tankōbon volume, which was released by Asahi Sonorama on November 7, 2019. [5] Much like Ito's other manga, the story isn't the tightest. This manga in particular, feels almost like a collection of short stories with a small thread connecting them together. With that said, these short stories are rather engaging and up there for me with some of my favorite Ito short stories. The connecting thread between the short stories is I am the one who created the universe. I am its Great Creator. Well, more precisely I will become so.Hazra, Adriana (November 29, 2021). This is my first Junji Ito book and also the first horror book I've ever read so I have a clean slate here. I haven't heard very much about Sensor as I have Ito's more popular works like Uzumaki and Gyo, other than this one being different. it made sense in the end when he made a note of how he went in with one thought about Kyoko being the narrator but left differently. I liked her but she wasn’t as fleshed out. Mateo, Alex (October 14, 2021). "My Hero Academia Ranks #1 on U.S. Monthly Bookscan September List". Anime News Network . Retrieved December 22, 2021. Before starting serialization, Junji Ito had a discussion with his editor over the main theme of the story. They eventually settled on making a more character-driven narrative, since it was something that Ito had not tried much in the past. Upon starting the series, Ito did not have a specific idea for its ending, often just piecing the story together as it went, following along with the characters. [2] Ito would often find this approach resulting in unexpected ideas helping to drive the story forward. [2] Publication [ edit ]

Sensor is the latest horror manga by Junji Ito and one of his best, a sprawling, meandering serialized story that unites many of his usual themes to create a saga of cosmic horror and existential dread.
