About this deal

Also known as pasture hay in Australia, this is high in protein and has the best balance between calcium and phosphorous out of all the hays available (Galens Garden, 2014).

Galens garden (2014) Understanding Hay (online). At: https://galensgarden.co.uk/herbivore-nutrition/herbal-hay/understanding-hay/ accessed 6/11/18. Oat hay is good food for adult guinea pigs, especially when you have to provide them with extra nutrients. It can also be beneficial if they don’t prefer 1st cutting Timothy hay. Works great as a treat Selecting barley hay that has been cut at the milky dough stage, so the grain and the barley awns are not fully developed is important.

What is oat hay

Be cautious of the oat hay’s quality, as moldy or dusty hay can be harmful to goats. Always provide clean and fresh hay.

DM intake is an important indicator for measuring the production and health of ruminants, and the digestibility of DM and OM can reflect the digestive characteristics of an animal’s diet. For a diet with a concentrate content less than 10%, the DM intake of roughage will increase with an increase in the grain content in the concentrate, and the proportion of grain in the concentrate will increase from 10% to 70%, leading to a decrease in the DM intake of roughage [ 26]. Studies have also shown that the proportion of concentrate in diets is positively correlated with the apparent digestibility of DM [ 27]. In this study, although the differences in DM intake, digestion and apparent digestibility between the three groups were not significant, an increase in oat hay content in the diet tended to increase these metrics. Therefore, hay was beneficial for increasing DM intake, digestibility and apparent digestibility in sheep. In our study, the apparent digestibility of OM did not differ significantly among the three groups, which might have been due to the increased feed intake of the test sheep, while the retention time of various nutrients in the rumen was shortened, preventing those nutrients from being fully digested and absorbed. These results were consistent with those from other reports that different feeding levels have no significant impacts on the apparent digestibility of DM and OM [ 28].

Oat hay vs timothy hay

The moderate protein levels support muscle development, ensuring goats possess the strength they need.

Oat hay is just like dried grass and consists of a long stem with oats attached at the end. The seed head contains immature oat grain. Pets at Home sells their own brand timothy, meadow and orchard hays, alongside named brands like Oxbow, Science Selective and Burgess amongst others: The rumen acts as a fermentation chamber where microbial magic occurs to break down the indigestible plant material into more manageable substances. Now that we’ve set the stage for our journey into goat nutrition, let us continue our exploration by unraveling the mysteries behind their dietary needs. In summary, it is important to remember that oat grass grown as a forage crop and oats grown as a cereal grain crop have different management and completely different nutritional outcomes, with regards to feeding horses. Visit our Standlee Forage Finder® to find the right type of forage to feed your horse, depending on their age, activity level and if they have any special needs, such as being overweight, carbohydrate sensitive, etc. Use the Standlee Feed Calculator® to assist in balancing your horse’s feed program, depending on how much current hay, grain, beet pulp or oil is being fed, to ensure they are receiving an adequate level of calories and fiber in their diet.
